What would you tell a first-time spot operator?

June's book describes a great method for rigging up iron sights too. I like that method if you're trying to save money.

What would you tell a first-time spot operator?

It is! I didn't realize she had another book out. I picked up her Spot Op guide book a few years ago and its great!

    Light up windows

I did this with LED strips inside a frame between two pieces of muslin to catch the light from the strips. It worked well enough, but the individual LEDs were somewhat visible and it didn't look all that natural since the gradually lost intensity toward the center of the "pane". In that case...

What would you tell a first-time spot operator?

https://web.archive.org/web/20150602024256/http://blogidaho.biz/earthlink/spotlite.htm@dvsDave Our fearless leader succeeded where I failed. I do remember it being funny (and it is). We're running a musical for an outside group and they asked to have the dad's (and occasionally a mom) run...

Positioning two stage monitors for dance recital?

That's another nice part of putting them US.

Positioning two stage monitors for dance recital?

I've done the DS corners, both more towards center and all the way out on the proscenium. For a musical group with tracks I put them behind the group and delayed the main and that worked exceptionally well. The kids heard it well, the monitors blend well with the mains and you end up running...

Creating Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis with limited resources

Creating Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis with limited resources

Not my idea, but a friend did this with a large roll of a reflective mylar material stretched across the back of the stage behind a ground row. They bounced light off the mylar into the cyc and had techs gently move the mylar to get the look they wanted. It was very effective.

    Reference databases for material acoustics...

I wonder too how much vibrational energy is transferred down the end pin. Most musicians I've seen use a foam or rubber rock stop aka hockey puck to avoid slipping and/or damaging the deck. That'd have a pretty significant attenuating effect.I've never seen anyone super concerned about the...

The use of AI in the entertainment industry

I think like every other leap in tech, people will use it to make bad art and artists will find a way to innovate in new ways. 🤷‍♂️ It's fun to make bad art sometimes

The use of AI in the entertainment industry

I've had two clients in the past month supply us with artwork that has been AI generated for their events. I think it has the potential to put a dent into the digital backdrop cottage industry.

When to Replace Birdcaging Wire Rope?

Coming from a venue that had zero access to houselights, it's nice that someone took the time to make a system to accomplish that relatively safely. It kinda looks like the winch drum bend radius is too small and might be causing it to unwravel, especially if the pendents are indeed that heavy...

    Replacement for Masonite?

A habit I got into was to lay down tempered hardboard over the T&G and tape the ends together. This created a floating floor that was great for building sets on, allowed for painting the floor without messing with the stage itself and the cast enjoyed the 4x8' tape seams for blocking, but once...

    LED Cycs

It kinda looks like a little speed bump. I think it'd make an interesting light for scenery illumination.
