It's a trait or behaviour or phenomenon (or in most cases, just an inside joke) that passes from person to person. The word, I think, is derived from the word "gene". It's like a socially transferred gene. LOLcats is a meme. Numa Numa is a meme. Who Let The Dogs Out was a meme, although we didn't have the word "meme" yet.

i agree, totally narcissistic. not only is it me, its me TWICE.
other examples in recent history include the Chuck Norris facts, not to mention failblog and more. basically, just fast-growing internet fads. anything from video to text to photoshopping. its also what some people call their grandma.

Over on FaceBook, the current meme is to post a number of questions (Who did you talk to first today? Are you a morning or evening person? etc) with your answers and then "tag" a bunch of friends, who have to replace your answers with their answers and repost...
