Socket Storage
Well it's come to that point. Due to a disintegrating case, I've decided to take the first tool set I was ever given, and merge it with my tool bag. It served me well for 5 or 6 years, but the case is falling apart. The main problem I am having though is with the sockets. The screwdrivers go in a pocket, the wrenches get a caribeaner, etc. But the 34 piece socket set? I can't decide how to store it in my bag. I've looked but I can't find an empty socket box. I could just put them in a pouch or something, but that won't keep them in order, thus making it hard to find the one I need. I once saw some sockets that my dad had tied into a continuous loop of string, but it was difficult to get the socket you needed off of the string. I've seen rail things with clips that fit into the bottom of the socket and hold it there, but I have some 3/8" sockets and 1/4", also Metric and SAE. Buying two of those rails would cost almost as much as buying a new socket set so that is kind of out... One idea I had was to take a small plastic box, fill it with spray foam insulation, add some plastic wrap, then press sockets down into the foam before it cures. That seems like it would be a little sloppy though. another variation would be to drill the appropriately sized holes in the foam after it cures.
If anyone has any ideas on how I could store these sockets, I would appreciate it a lot. It's a 34 piece set with a 3 inch extension, 3/8" to 1/4" adapter, 5/8" spark plug socket (not really necessary), and a ratchet.
