Default Labels for XLR

We have a variety of XLR cables at different lengths. In order to help new people know how long a cable is quickly and to keep similar lengths together while in storage, I started using a new method of labeling cables. I typed up the different lengths multiple times and printed them out. Then after cutting the paper labels appart I took about an inch of clear packing tape and wrapped it around both the label and the cable near the connector. This way it will stay for a long time while it is easy to remove if necesary.

Won't packing tape leave horrible residue?

just get some bright gaff tape or some other tough tape, and use a different color for each length. have like an inch of tape around the cable by the connector. like pink=5ft, orange=10ft and so forth...

Aside from color coding---a P-Touch with a strip of clear Dance Floor tape over it--or better yet clear heat shrink, makes a nice marker.

FWIW...

the packing tape leaves no residue, and if it does its a lot less residue than gaff tape. And by typing out the length one doesn't have to remember a color code. But if one wanted a color code just use different colored paper.

Is there a standard for color coding cable lengths?

I have done your solution a lot over the years. Cheap and very cost effective. Might even attempt to apply your labels to some double sided carpet tape but overall the clear packaging tape normally does just as good if not a better job of sticking as other tapes.

If it changes depending on who you ask then there isn't a standard.

There probably never will be a standard colour code either as if one were decided upon, who is going to want to go through their inventory and re-code all their cables and then re-educate all of their staff?
