In my theatre we make it a practice to tether a crescent wrench to our belts whenever we need to work on ladders or on the grid. My question is thus: what is the easiest way to create a tether? Most of our techs use a combination of a telephone cord and either nicopress sleeves or crosbys. Any suggestions?

I've fashioned several tethers from the really small, short bungie cords, attached to a caribiner, quick link or snap link for the belt-loop end. Works pretty good.

We just use a piece of tie-line with a loop tied on the opposite end of the wrench so that you can hook it on your belt loop by pulling the wrench through the loop or use a carabiner with it.

I'm half way through getting myself some tethers, all I'm going to do is just use a bit of wire looped and then use a small karibener to clip it to my belt, I will then be able to unclip it when I need it...
Occasionally, I used to use one of the free lanyards and just clipped it onto the wrench and then wrapped it around my hand, when using it, or just looping it through my belt, when I wasnt using it... Diarmuid

A few years ago, it was really big to buy a back pack that had an elastic band cris-crossing the front of the bag (I don't know why). I just took that off my old backpack, cut it in half (so I can make two, they are pretty long) and clamp a carabiner on each end.
Here's the backpack that I mean. Click Here It also doesn't stretch out as easily as a phone cord. So if you drop it, it doesn't take you an hour to pull up 100 feet of cord.

I used to just use extra safety cords I had laying around. Just put the clip end through the loop while it's through a belt loop and clip the carabiner to the wrench.

I use an old telephone chord. I pushed the chord through a crimp then through the wrench then back through the crimp and used a vise grip to snug it down. It was hard to do but now that i'm finished it's nice and secure. It's attached using the same method to a carabiner. It works well except for the extra length gets in the way. Also it takes about four ft to stop when it falls so if you're less than four ft off the ground it could be a problem.
