Default Drop Zone

At the theatre that I have worked at this summer we have something called a drop zone. It is a wonderful idea. By all of our hardware and supplies it is a shelf and we can put anything up there and one person the next morning will put it all away. We use buckets to take screws or hinges or what have you to where we are working and then when we are done with it we just stick the bucket actually it is a plastic ready to measure mixing container, in the drop zone. It is simple and takes less time that putting things away when we are done with them and as many of you if not all of you know people never want to put things away.

Where I have been working we have a older carpenter that comes in just in the mornings. The times that he is not there we rotate among the crew.

I prefer to just drop everything on the floor and make the IA hands put it away when I am done. Having unskilled labor around is great, you never have to put anything away or get anything out.

Sounds like a bit of a cop out to me. If you have pride in your work and your workplace isn't it worth keeping it tidy yourself?

On the other hand footer i think using unskilled labour to clean up is a good way to teach them the importance of the work.

I've just read that back to myself and realised how sanctimonius it sounds. God I sound like a prig. The basic point however is I believe true.

The sad thing is that these are union IA guys, they shouldn't be unskilled. We have a few guys who do know what they are doing, but the other half are pretty much neck downs (dont use your head, just lift types). Usually I have one or two following me around to hold, get, clean up, and other random things.

Assistants are awesome. It's so late, that I can't remember how I know this, if I assist people, or people assist me. But having someone that says "I'm on it." is great.

We have a hardware table in our shop. It is kind of catch-all for hardware that people are finished with. Sometimes the pile of hardware gets pretty high, and we have people sort it, when there isn't much else going on. It is a constant process, and the table is really only ever clear at the very beginning of the season and at the very end.

Soup or art?
