I've been looking into the available storage bin-and-shelf units for the electrics shop. Currently things are very unorganized, as the main workbench has a cubby-style wooden organizer, and the lamps all sit off in a dark corner in a state of confusion. I like the products offered by Quantum, especially this unit here:
http://www.northernsafety.com/cart/c...20BE&Action=01 Do you think this would be a reasonable sized system for an electrics shop responsible for a very rough approximate of 200 fixtures and 1500+ feet of cable, plus all the usual accessories? We currently have other shelving units housing top hats, barn doors and the like, but I think a bin system like this would be great for nuts, bolts, sheet metal screws, stagepin connectors, spare 6" lenses, lamp base caps, A-lamps, tools and all the other usual small parts. Additionally, might a system like this be useful for S4 par lenses? Currently they reside in their original boxes in a filing cabinet, makign them hard to search and find.

I'm thinking about the large bin rack to store items currently in a few different locations because I'd like to built some more meat racks on which to hang all the instruments now taking up floor space. With all the new Source 4 ERS's and S4 PAR's we've purchased in the last year, we've run out of room to store all our instruments, especially the Altman 8" Fresnels that I want to eventually rehab and keep functional. After a strike there is hardly any room to move in the shop. Also some of the bounty of 360Q's hung on the pipes in the Studio will probably come back to the shop.
Additionaly, I was considering using a rack like this to store S4 PAR lenses.

I recently bought something like this from & it is fabulous. I had the same problem with everything mixed up in various boxes. It's really nice to be able to walk in & find something right away. It also helps make sure my students put stuff back where it belongs.
The unit I got is pretty much identical in size to what you are looking at. I did get two different size bins, so I have some that are narrow (4") & wide (8"). My bins just slide out, but I think I'd like the tilt & lock on the one you are looking at. My other wish is that I had an 18" deep unit instead of 12". You'll be glad you got it. |

I've been looking at a lot of this kind of stuff for the new theater. Sam's Club has a nice rack on wheels with 18 LARGE bins on it for about $110... you might want to check that out if you have a membership. The bins have a slot for subdividing them so I'm going to cut some luan and subdivide it into half bins for nuts, bolts, screws, and hinges. I' m planning on a wall mounted unit for the small yellow bins... put it up behind the bench on the wall and save floor space.
![]() The Sams Rack is 54" high by 36" wide and 14" deep. Those bins are probably too big for electrics. But great for the carpentry. I wish I could find something similar for with the small bins on it that didn't cost a fortune.
