Down here I can legally lock a fire exit. But it has to be with a fail safe electric lock, say a magnetic lock AND it has to be tied into the fire alarm so that when the alarm trips it goes off AND there must be a detector within 1 metre of the door either side AND you have to have a break glass unit on the side you would be escaping from that is hardwired to disconnect power to the mag lock. Normally also has a second set of contacts wired into the security alarm or the like...
Perhaps a viable solution? Especially with it not opening to the street, if the alarm goes off and unlocks the door in the middle of the night it wouldn't be the end of the world...
Maybe I could rig all my curtains kabuki drop style, with some solenoids, wired into the fire alarm system. If the alarm goes off all the curtains drop and every exit is revealed!

Well, for storage...

Safety cable seems to work quite well.
