    Default DMX Fixture Libraries

    Hi all,

I am new here and stumbled across this place after a long google, I have floated around other technical forums but I think this one would suit my needs better!

I am a University student not far off graduating. I will be doing an event shortly using a Strand 520i. While I am familiar with using this desk for conventionals, I am not familiar using it with moving lights. As such our desk does not have up to date fixture libraries.

I have heard and read it is possible to create DMX fixture libraries using basic notepad files? How do I go about this? Is there a step by step guide? What is the upload process onto the desk? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just wondered if anybody new of a cost effective DMX tester that an a programmer can chuck in his tool box. I don't mind home made DIY jobs, I just want something simple and effective.

    Thanks very much everyone,

    Matt

From the CB Collaborative Article DIY DMX: Demux, Protocol Converters, etc. "A simple to build DMX tester, almost as good as the ones DFD charges $25 for: Make a DMX tester.."
Good authors too who once knew better words, Now only use four letter words, Writing prose.

I thought I would update this, the guides have proved invaluable and the tutorials very clear and concise.

    As for the tester:

OSP CT-04C CABLE TESTER XLR/TRS/RCA/MIDI/SPEAKON/USB/RJ on eBay, also, Parts Accessories, Pro Audio Stage Effects, Electronics (end time 21-Dec-08 21:02:56 GMT)

Came to just under £60. And will hopefully be arriving shortly and should quite easily do what I need. Thanks for everyones help.

Someone at Strand still cares and is creating new fixture libraries for the 500 & 300 Series consoles.

500 Series Fixture Library Registration | Strand Lighting - A Philips Group Brand

Plus with the information from Bobby's site mentioned above, a copy of the user manual of which ever MLs you want to use, & a text editing program, you can make your own profiles and upload them to the console as easily as reading the notes on the console or even editing them from there if you have to.

    Cheers!
