Default Chauvet Obey 10 as an RFU? Hmmm

Hey guys, I recently had a thread about RFUs, and concluding that I would be out a few hundred for an RFU for our Express I reliezed I had a Chauvet Obey 10 sitting here at home in my DJ rig and I rarely use the controller, so I read up on it, and basicly it has 128 controllable channels, meant to be 16 8 channel intelligent lights. However I was wondering if I where to get a 3-Pin DMX-5 Pin DMX cable since the controller is 3 pin, and connect it to either right to the rack or second control input, would I be able to have control over the rack? And Being in 'Light 1' would give me control over dimmers 1-8 and so on? Or would I run into problems?

I do not care if the 'Rfu' I use interfaces with the board, I just am looking for a portable way to control our system. And being a 2 space rack mount, it is fairly small.

    Hope this would work!

Strictly speaking, a DMX controller is a DMX controller.
If you can control each channel individually and your dimmers are addressed to numbers between 1 and 128 everything is pretty straightforward.
It should work as long as you turn off your Express when using the Obey.

Wonderful :D And here I was about to bring up buying a $350+ RFU.

We have an i96 so I assume the dimmers are addressed 1-96. (Minus spacers and inactive modules)

Can't wait to bring it in to try it out,

Don't think I will have any problems using a 3-5 pin converter? I am not sure pin configuration etc on this.

Pins 4 and 5 are secondary data links and not necessary for basic operations.
Something like this should be perfect.

See adapter, 3-5. Does the i96 rack have a "Port B" input available?

Wonderful, I assumed they where grounds but guess not, but either way that is good. And yes we use all conventional fixtures so only, basic one channel functions.

    derek,
Honostly I do not know. Mainly the rack is in a somewhat dark area and I have never bent down to see the computer on the furthest down mount so I have never read the text on it. However I know there is a control input directly to the rack, one next to the rack and one in the booth.

Well I know the controller I have is a female output. Now I am scratching my head trying to remember what the control inputs are X_X I am going to assume they are male.

    Edit,

Oh wait, it would have to be a male because a male-male wire would be illegal/not regulation yes?

    Edit2,

And know I just remembered, yes the control inputs are male, so I only need a 3Pin Male to 5 Pin Female, such as the one you linked avkid. Althought the one linked is $40 0_0
Might just buy a $7 one from Amazon ^^

It's only $24, but a cheaper one will work too.

Eons ago, AVkid turned me on to these:

    DMX_5F3M-5M3F

I bought five of each, and have been very happy with them. [And I've only lost one, (I think) in two years.]

    Oops, forgot about those.
Definitely get the Audiopile ones before random ones off Amazon.

There's tons of 3/5 pin adapters out there. They should all work.

And get a long enough cable so you can run the controller out onto the deck so the person running it can hear the person doing the focusing.

Great, I will order one of the audiopile ones. Actually cheaper than ones on Amazon.

And yeah, will probably use the cable connecting our board to the booth control input as this is something im doing myself. I will ask for another cable but for now since its the end of the season and reno in the summer I think I should keep my mouth shut for now :D

We have a 50 foot DMX cable going from the desk our boards on, a few feet down to an input..

    Ah well

Will post back on how operation is.
