    Default Ion fan is loud

I'm here at school and one of the designers bumped the tech table that the ion was sitting on and now the fan is so loud you can hear it through out the house. We have a temp replacement but has anyone encountered this before and how did you fix it?

Is it making a different type of sound now like rattling? Or is it the same sound but just louder? You could carefully open up your ION and taking a look. Make sure when you open it that if you have a fader wing that its detached if you have one and that you don't forget about the four little screws on the bottom closest to you (when sitting behind console) in addition to all the other ones on the side.

No its a buzzing sound similar to a computer fan that has a chipped blade. The fader wing is always detached (makes it easier to move the tech table to the audience from the booth). I'm not completely sure if we are going to open it up or if we are just going to send it in (since its one of the last shows of the season and we will have a break before the next need for it). the sound is coming out of the fan on the back panel.

After some deliberation we're thinking either the fan is off its bearings and that's whats causing the noise.

Also a note while i'm thinking about it I've noticed when I've used the label feature on cues if I have a Colon then a number with no space and I delete the number it also deletes the Colon, Is this a bug because I can't ever see needing to delete the colon every time.

Then my guess is that the fan got bumped off its bearings enough for it to hit the side of the fan housing. Don't be afraid of opening up the multi thousand dollar board. its surprisingly easy as long are you're careful about it. Everything inside is easily accessible so if it is a chipped fan then you should be able to get to it and change it out if you can find a replacement online. But if the board is still under warranty (which i am guessing it still is) then there is no harm in sending it to ETC or wherever you bought it from to get it checked out

On virtually any other console, I would agree with you. The Ion and Congo Jr. are my two exceptions.

Please do not remove all of the screws along the sides and the bottom. Failing to follow the proper dis-assembly order will lead to frustration and a lot more parts to put back together. There are some screws that should be only loosened and some that should be removed completely. (The three screws on the bottom are in the first category.)

If you feel the unquenchable desire to open your Ion, please give Technical Support a call at 800-688-4116 so we can talk you through the proper procedure.

To the OP, DuckJordan, please give us a call at 800-688-4116 Monday between 8-5 Central Time and we can determine the exact cause of your added fan noise and bring your console back for repair if needed.

I called ETC for the proper procedure and they gave me specific screw numbers to loosen and take out. I guess it just slipped my mind to mention that. I was only reseating the RAM briefly, didn't look around too much but the insides of the console looked pretty accessible though I am not by any means questioning your expertise since I am guessing you work for ETC.

P.S.- I heart ETC tech support

    ElectroCarp, PM sent.

The process for removing the facepanel is complicated, but you are correct in saying that once open, most components are pretty accessible.

It is our hope that users will not need to open or disassemble their console. If they should, we would like to know about it to make sure that it isn't indicative of a larger issue as well as to guide the process along to avoid unnecessary aggravation.
