Default using aircraft landing lights

i've found a great deal on aircraft landing lights, too good to pass up, but the whole power issues behind these confuses me. the lamps are 28 volts 450 watts. from what i understand, if you wire up 4 in a series it makes a standard 120 volt circuit. but do you add up the wattage with it, or does that stay the same? would 4 of these lights be 450 watts, or 1800 watts? power is the biggest issue where i'm using these at....of course adding another dimmer or two is another problem.

Wiring them up in series will give you a total of:

112 volts and 1800 watts load

When ever you add lights to a circuit the wattage is always added.

By the way - welcome to the site.

well i figured you added wattage as well as voltage, i was just hoping i was wrong. looks like i won't be using these lights anytime soon...i cant afford another dimmer (or 2)....and i'm about out of power as it is anyways.

How good is the price? Is it worth you getting them now for future use, or in shows where you may not be using as many other lights?

it's a fairly good price, in my opinion. $40 for 10 of them...excluding shipping. i had considered just buying these and holding on to them for future use....but i've got enough crap to store as it is, and i've spent enough money as it is. i've got about 2 more days to decide if i really want them, but i think i'll just let this one go...i already got a couple scanners for a couple hundred below retail.

Well, would you ever use these lights for anything? If you would use them for a show, and you have the storage room, then I would go for it, however, if you don't need it, then why bother?

oh i'd definetly use them. keep in mind that i work with rock concerts only, so it's not too hard to find a use for something. but with power and dimmer restrictions, i'm going to have to trade off using my "audience blinders" ((2) 1kw par 64s...cheap version of a molefay) for these lights. in the entire theater we only have 160 amps to work with, and this has to last for both sound and lighting. most of the sound guys we get in there (myself excluded) use up 60-80 amps, and we still need power for the band's backline..so there's not a whole lot left for lighting.

until someone comes up with the 10 grand to upgrade to the 800 amp service, i'm stuck with these power restrictions.

ACL's is a popular lighting effect for concerts using conventionals. I usually always put it into my shows. I usually will use about 2-4 par bars and fan them out. It's makes a cool effect when using haze or fog.
