I'd gel them with a medium red and if they need to be toned down add some neutral density.

I find that on my red curtains just a no color wash works the best with my footlights. (I've tried various colors...)

Can you put them on dimmers? Then you won't have the problem with it. And unless you're going for a beam effect, you might want to put some silk or diffusion in them to combat the narrow beam, it will help soften it.

I assume that you wanted the narrow beam (since that's what you chose to rent) so you're going for a column of light. Bill's right on with a medium red. The light should read as a tad brighter than the curtain colour. You might also want to experiment with diagonals across the curtains instead of straight uplight. Maybe 4 of the lights a light red and 4 medium red? Depending on what kind of spread you get with the height your working with and how far from the wall you want to place the instruments, loading them up with linear breakups (focused about 2/3 up the curtain) might also look pretty cool.
