Default Know absolutely nothing. Need help.

First, I want to say thanks for any assistance members give.

I am "doing" my daughters wedding.... on the very CHEAP.

She now wants a little up lighting on one wall.
Just two column shaped up lights that splash on the ceiling.
The walls are covered in draperies, too.
(The lights will be placed on the floor behind and near the ends of the head table, kinda framing it.)

I've been searching the internet and find PAR cans quite inexpensive. (Went to a rental shop today, and they want $88 a day to rent two. I'll need it for two days. $170.00 is way too much when I know I can buy the darned things for way less.)

My question is... what size? The rental office suggested a 64.
Will this size produce the column shape light? Will a 38 do the same? I ask because I have easy access to PAR38 bulbs.
But will do a 64 if it produces the shape we need.

This is the kind of light we want:

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help!

The "Columns" appear to be PAR 64 (or 56) MFL. The real question is how bright do you want them. You can get 300W lamps or 600W lamps. If the are going to be gel - I'd go with the higher wattage. Just watch the orientation of the lamp so you get the right spill pattern.

Tells us where you are located, I am sure several of the members can make recommendations baout who to talk to for rentals/ cheap purchases.

Best of luck!

I think she is in the ATL, as per her other posts. If so, there are a few places in the Atlanta area that you can pick some things up from. If I was still in the area, I might even be able to work something out. Let us know if you are actually in the Atlanta area, there are a few of us there....

Thanks guys!
I am in the Florida panhandle, near Pensacola.

Also, since they will be sitting on the floor, is there some special something you do to hold them upright, safe and stable?

You can buy a Par 38 fixture with a 90w Halogen spotlamp and a floor base for about $ 35.00 and it will do the job.

Four Quick Notes:
1) Price looks wildly high, you could buy them for that! China cans- $20 plus bulb. Good cans- $70 plus bulb. $16 to $28 for each bulb.
2) Gel should be high temp, with a heat shield. (The lights are facing straight up and are left on full.)
3) Watch out what they are aimed at and make sure you are not setting the stage for a fire. Try them out for awhile and make sure you are not making anything too hot.
4) As for bases, in such an application, I always found old cast microphone stand bases worked great. 1/2 bolt, nut, washers. Make sure you have good ventilation around the base.
I think you are near a company called "All Pro Sound", might want to check their prices. (Don't think they rent, but buy might be cheaper.)

All Pro Sound is pretty close to you. I have been buying things from them for a long time. You might want to drop in their and see if they can help you directly, that way you will have everything you need and know what you need to do with the stuff you have.

The prices you have been quoted are way to high, you can buy a set of 6 for that price, the stands you talked about are known as "H Stands" they are relatively simple to make if you own a welder, or will cost you about $15 if you want to buy them.

Anyone suggest a good gel this is?

Nick

If you're in Pensacola contact the theatre department at West Florida University, specifically the Ligthing Designer. They may be able to help you out as well.

For just a plain uplight for a wedding I might use once, I might go with some home center type 500w yellow or what ever color work light and buy some hex type chicken wire in 1x1 screen for it so as to hold down what ever gel if any is required to this fixture.

Simple and done. Rectangular pattern instead of oval pattern of light.

Depends upon the design of course but such lights in my opinion even if throw away or storage in your garage until you need to remodel are very useful or uplight and at times sufficient.

Chicken wire to hold down the gel plus the price of the chosen gel after that. Such a lamp can easily go down to 300w or 150w if too intense in effect.
