I have been tasked with creating an effect that gives the feeling and illusion intended for the final scene in Jesus Christ Superstar, Jesus on the Cross. We can not fly him, so lighting is our next best option.
Stage is Thrust, meaning I have no down light available, as I am in front of the rig, I have side tress at approx 30 feet at 20 degrees and a bar in the house center of the house for front light. I am thinking something along the lines of a slower strobe (during the death - stark and white), followed by a 4 fernels hidden in the stage for up light (accession to heaven style). Ideas? |

I suggest uplighting from the back with fresnels.

Can you cut a hole in the floor? One inch of Lexan and a 1K fresnel would make for a nice effect.

And those uplight effects would really be helped by haze or fog, so you could see the beams.

Can you get backlight in from above at all? I programmed a production of JCS for a colleague 18 months ago and for the Crucifixion he used a single narrow parcan blasting in from behind (the cross was right downstage) with some darker blue backlight - as Jesus died we took out all the frontlight so he was left in silhouette - looked pretty cool....

you could possibly look at a box under the cross (like the bench in the last picture but filled in, and place the lights in there, Haze with a breakup patten gobo could create a very strong beam of light effect.

I worked with the build crew and worked in two spots for lights under the stage, that they will pull the covers on the same time they pull the cover on the hole for the cross. This allows me to uplight the cross from approx 2 feet back and 2 feet to either side. The holes are not big enough for 8" fresnels, but I could put 6x9's in there or smaller cans / 6 " fresnel. I do not have a haze machine, though would like to get one, and have a fogger, but dont want to fog the whole stage at the end of the show.

You can turn your fogger into a psudo hazer. Get a high output fan and mount it to a box. Mount 4" dryer hose to the output side of the box. Set the output of your fogger to low or use intermittently near the input of the fan.
Duct the hose into the box holding the cross and drill a few output holes in the box.
