Default Lighting Board effect steps

Is there a place anyone knows of that has lighting board effects with their steps written out? if not, we could create a good thread here with that type of information.

It would be to post your programmed effect steps for Lightning, Televisions, fireworks, chases, or any other type of lighting effect that has to be written as an effect cue. Other's could use them as a basis in their own shows to work off of. thoughts?

Generally most effects are written to be specific to the show they are used in. You have to consider that everyone has their shows patched differently and their rigs are set up differently. So, sharing your effect is probably a moot point. This of course is besides the fact that people should design their own shows. Also, most of the newer consoles have many simple built in effects that are easy to call up and use.

well sure, but having a basis for lightning, fireworks, etc can be useful. im happy to share effect cues for stuff i have with no worries that im getting ripped off. this board is all about helping. id be nice to say, man i need to do this type of effect... how are other people doing it? ah, this way is pretty good, i can find a way to integrate it or play with it to make it work for my show"

Well, we have a section in our Wiki for collaborative articles, and you are more than welcome to start one on effects!

The big thing is that we try to stay away from giving out real design ideas as we want people to learn how to design for themselves. We would be happy to teach someone how to write an effect, but we would rather that they have some sort of idea of what they want it to look like first.

It isn't a bad thought, it just needs some work. We have (and I am sure we will continue) to answer questions like: "I need to create to effect of light from a movie screen on stage, how do I do it?" The answer you might see would be something like this: "Depending on the equipment you own and your budget, you might try to build a lobsterscope or write an effects cue that pulses the light that is supposed to be the source."

We also answer a lot of questions along the lines of: "I want to create XYZ effect and I have the lights in place, so how do I program it on my ABC console?" We are happy to help people out in learning to program their consoles, but generally we won't tell them things like: "Step one should have channel X at 50% and have a step time of 7..." and so on.

While some of the main goals of this community are education and the sharing of knowledge we believe that you learn a lot more by coming up with design ideas on your own rather than hitting the internet. YOu will notice as you surf the forums that most of the questions like "We are doing XYZ show and I have no idea how to light it, can anyone who has done this show tell me what to do?" Are met with the same answer: "We can't really tell you how to design your show, it is yours, and you have to make it yours. We can guide you in the right direction and we can certainly help if you have specific questions on how to create a look with the gear that you have."

People are so reliant on Google and the internet these days to be the one stop shop for everything. Sometimes people forget that they can and should think for themselves every now and then.

I truly do encourage you to start a collaborative article on creating effects. there is no reason not to have a place where basic concepts are outlined for different types of effects. I would just try to stay away from posting actual effects written out step by step.

Or... in my view...

Posting recipe is fine, but we aren't going to bake it for you.

Wouldn't it be more correct to say, we will give you a recipe is if you tell us what you want to bake.

Another factor that comes into play here is that the recipe changes depending on what console you're using, as different manufacturers use different protocols for programing cues and effects.
