While reading PLSN I happened upon an article entitled DMX 512-A. The new protocol uses all five pins in the DMX cable. The fourth and fifth pins serve as a secondary data link that can be used for a variety of purposes. Does anyone care to speculate the impact it may have on the industry?

Originally, the 5 pin design was so that fixtures could feed data back to the desk. The idea being one could look at things like lamp hours, motherboard operating temp, check fixture software versions, etc.
Really, tho, I doubt that much of that will impact anything lower in price than the biggest touring fixtures, such as the M2K or Obi products. The need just won't be there.
