Just to show how improper usage of anything can cause serious damage to people, safety first --

Ouch, this made me begin to think that staring into laser pointers throughout my whole child may not have been the wisest idea.

They're lucky that they walked away only partially blinded. The news clip said that some have experienced up to an 80% loss of vision but no one had lost their vision completely. Unfortunately, any amount of this nature of damage is considered generally irreversible.
