- I'm a high school student that has a secondary life as a lighting and sound technician. I am involved with many productions at my school, but I also have a job at a local black-box theater doing both lights and sound there.
I've been into theater since my school's 5th grade ritual play of Wizard of Oz (Yeah, it's so creative). Despite the fact that I was an actor, the lighting fades and moving lights absolutely fascinated me. I acted for 2 more years, before switching to crew work in 8th grade. My first console was a Dell computer running Horizon through a DMX->AMX converter. It was kind of like using a 5-billion-dollar robot to add 2 + 3; that's how different the two interfaces were.
After going to high school, I learned a huge amount of lights and sound, with our school having an ETC Express 24/48, with state-of-the-art Sensor dimmers and other modern technologies. It's been at this school that I've gained most of my knowledge of the technical theater field, and I'm planning on continuing through college.
There isn't one of the two that I prefer (lighting or sound). They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I like lighting because it gives my the opportunity to get my artistic side out into the open, and it also is the part that they audience notices. Sound doesn't have those advantages, but you also get the non-repetitiveness (you never know what will happen; broken mic etc) that lighting cues don't have.

- If I ate a tub of cookie dough ice cream every time something in my high school theatre went wrong... I'd be dead by now of a sugar overdose.
