    Default Good day to you!

    Ahoy!
My name is Pat and I and from the great state of Michigan! I am currently in the process of going back to that wonderful state as I currently am stationed in Ft. Hood, TX with the USArmy. I used to do some theatrical productions in high school (2000-04) and about 6 productions at Eastern Michigan University. I am now enrolled as a full time student at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. If anyone has any info on their technical program(s) I would love to have a cyber coffee with you! I did most of my work at EMU behind a sound board and in high school I did a mixture of things... construction, sound, some lighting, a lot of stage managing, and some student directing. I would like to pursue a career that is focused on audio engineering and the sound aspects of theatre and production, and possibly look at what the life of a stage manager has to offer. I love musicals more than anything else and have quite a musical backround as I played tuba, trombone, and double bass for almost 12 years. I was in EMU's music program along with the theatre and marched with Southwind Drum and Bugle Corp for a year. Hope to get to know some of you! Cheers!
    -Pat

Welcome Pat! Always great to have another Metro Detroiter her on CB. I know quite a bit about Wayne, and would say that you might not be in the right department there if you want to peruse sound as a living. I, personally feel there are better undergrad programs in the area for theatre. You will certainly want to check out Wayne's Music Technology program. Although a different focus, I feel that could be a better fit if you want to do sound professionally.

The track for an individual who wishes to become an Equity Stage Manger is very different than someone perusing sound professionally. You will not find a program that is well suited for both in the area.

Feel to PM me. I am happy to chat. Good to have you aboard!

Welcome back to the Water-Winter Wonderland! Well, that was on license plates a lil ways back...

I'm currently res LD (and ME) at a local regional theatre. A number of friends have been at EMU for quite awhile, likely folks you worked with or took classes from. I went to Wayne State and spent time (good times!) at both the Bonstelle and Hilberry theatres as undergrad and grad (lighting and sound). Let's just say we were cutting tape for sound edits w/razors at the time. Programs and staffing have changed quite a bit so I have to admit weaker knowledge about it these days - but I'd be up for a chat as well. Please feel free to PM. Let's catch up sometime.

Your mention of music is interesting. I was in vocal and instrumental(melody percussion) music for a long time before coming to the 'light' side! I very much think that makes me stronger in the lighting world. That's a great asset.

Thank you for your Service and Welcome Back,

    Reid

    Welcome to CB!

I personally love my (limited) musical "background". I think it makes a lot of things easier.

Thank you all for the responses... makes me feel a bit more welcomed. I've been out of the scene for a few years and my experience in the Army has made me a bit hesitant about the whole college/theatre/being social deal. Any advice would be and is wonderful!

Get stuck in, put your skills to use. The best crew chief I've worked with was ex-Army. Real nice guy, but he definitely knew how to run a shop and organize people. And welcome to the community!
