Hi! My name is Justin. I am a freshman at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN. I am studying to be a teacher, but as my school does not have a theatre department, anyone can be a part of the Theatre productions. I am mostly a self-taught lighting designer, mostly by trial-and-error. I do lighting because I really enjoy it, and have been working with audio equipment for six and a half years and light equipment for four and a half. I also do video recording/editing, and I enjoy public speaking/acting, but behind-the-scenes is much more fun! The lighting grid at my school isn't the greatest, though, but I make do. The distributors are from the seventies, we have about 20 ellipsoidals, 20 fresnels, and 30 scoop lights to work with. I look forward to helping where I can on this website, and I thank anyone who helps me out!

I'll add my hidy ho's to the mix as well. I worked in a college as a drama assistant (i.e. run the scene shop, hung lights, troubleshot anything that wasn't working, painted drops, etc.), so if you have any theater questions (that aren't necessarily lighting or sound) I'm your girl. Otherwise I leave you in the very capable hands of the others.

The only advice I can give you is never under-estimate the power of a well hung McCandeles plot...hmm, that doesn't look like it's spelt right). It's amazing what that and a very specials can accomplish, especially if you don't have a lot to start with.

"Mccandless" as in if McDonalds sold Candles. Yeah it's been what 80 years? But Stanley got it right. There are of course times that you can't make it work due to the space design, but even then a modification can work wonders.

Okay, I'm annoyed because I spelled it right the first time and changed it - my journalism prof is rolling in his grave...well, he would be if he were dead.

It's true that space can limit, but we have said plot in the theater and it makes a world of difference when we have outside events coming in at the last minute. The board is all marked, so that even I can figure out how to program it. It also helps when you have a fussy director who wants more rehearsal lights.

Anyhow, it's not how many fixtures you have hung, it's all about location, baby.
