crappy cd player/bad cd???

So we're up here in the booth, and randomly during an explosion cue, the cd player jumped tracks to curtain call music!! Nobody was touching the thing, and the sound consultant behind me said "that wasn't you, it jumped a track". Wtf???? Annnnoyyyyyiiinnngggg.

What kind of CD player is it?

It could be either.

Some discs - especially home burnt ones done at fast speeds - don't meet Redbook specs, and some players - especially some of the better ones - don't deal well with this. I've had ones that my laptop would not play either - but a cheap boombox would.

It could be that the laser lens is dusty and needs cleaning.

The CD-RW2000 is a fairly expensive stand alone burner.

It's probably something relating to the disc.

I had a situation a couple of years ago where our video server went down in our automated movie theatre and we had to run manually off of the DVD backups. Someone had 'decided' to leave one of the DVD's out of its case, face up, when it wasn't being used and allowed some 'gunk' to get stuck to it. The next person in the booth put the DVD away (which I appreciated) but didn't notice the 'gunk' on it. The next show time it was placed in the player and when the laser hit the gunk it bounced somewhat randomly to a point somewhere else in the movie.

This off course happens while I'm on vacation and on a weekend so not even the I.T. or Electronics departments can make a new DVD copy to use. As a consequence I always check my DVD backups at least once a month.

I have a Stanton C.500 dual CD player ... has been a rock, except for a production this past fall when the curtain speech (the only track on the CD) jumped from the middle of the track back to the beginning. Threw the audience (and us) for a loop. That was the only glitch in almost two years of service.
