    Computer MOTU Traveler Installation Problems

    I have been assigned the task of recording an original shows for the playwrights and was told by an "expert" to record the audio seperately from the video. So he gives me a camera and an audio interface (MOTU Traveler). I find one PC that has my audio software on it and has the PC version of a Firewire port. I downloaded the drivers from the website and everything installs perfectly, then I connect the interface, and turn it on. I click on the software icon and a notice comes up...NO MOTU DEVICE CONNECTED(something like that)... Slightly aggitated at the fact that I followed the directions precisely and it didn't work...I don't have another computer with the "firewire" port and I reinstalled the drivers 8 or 9 times...it has yet to work. It is an acer desktop with the small frame CPU running Windows vista 32-bit.

    Any Suggestions?

    I have NOT worked with the traveler, but on firewire devices sometimes there are a few issues getting them to connect to the pc

    You might try booting up the system with the device attached
    OR you might try booting up the system with the device NOT attached

    Down on your taskbar you should get the message when the device has or has not been attached

    Firewire is also a network connection, so it is possible that some firewire on the notebook has blocked access I would go into device manager and look and see if the firewire port is there and active

    Some systems also need to have the driver installed in a special sequence,, for instance I have seen cases where the driver MUST be installed before the device is attached, and in others where the driver CANNOT be instaled before the device

    Since Firewire has a standard driver it is POSSIBLE that the standard driver is installed and hat is connecting to the device and the MOTU driver does not attach

    If the device is being detected the actual device name (something that says it is MOTU or Traver will show up ) Ie with sony cameras, SONY camera shows up not just firewire

    I certainly would Give MOTU a call

    Just make sure that on your video you still have AUDIO so that you can sync the two systems, and DO NOT stop the video OR the AUDIO unless you stop both and then have typically a Visual and Audio sound to sync them both to

    Otherwise this will be an absolute nightmare to re sync

    First of all, Thank you for your advice.

    I installed in the order it told me to. Install drivers, connect device, turn device on.

    The interface is bus powered and is powering up. I have found a MOTU something in System Devices,and the port is active and says is working properly. It doesn't say anything is connecting in the system tray or in device manager. there tech support from what I understand costs so I am kinda wanting to find it somewhere else before I spend money on something that is not mine.

    Thanks again!!

    I did a quck google and found this link

    Preliminary review, MOTU Traveler MKIII

    you might want to look at the cpu utilization and see if for some reason it is going thru some enormously long and intensive start up

    In the past, I have to say I have kept away from MOTU on windows platforms, they really seem to focus on Apple, but again that might be just an anecdote

    you might try to see if you can get it to work on another machine

    I am not sure of when this device attaches in vista, but in xp the firewire deviced show up as attaching and allow you to stop and disconnect them

    See what shows up on the connect/disconnect icon by your system clock

    Sorry I cannot be more help

    Vista and firewire 1394? - Vista Help

    driver problem with MOTU - Computers & Software Forum - Home Recording Studio Help

    Basically what I gather from all this is a few things to check

    One is there might be a problem with your firewire chip set, these devices seem to only work well with TI firewire chip sets
    There also could be an issue where the install did not originally work properly and there is a registry entry problem

    One trick is to go into SAFE MODE and remove the device/program then sarch the registry for any MOTU entry and delete it and then try to start over

    When you first connect the device it should say new hardware found then it SHOULD find the MOTU driver if it does NOT then it is likely finding the generic driver. Another thing is to go into networking and disable the firewire network connection, it is POSSIBLE that the system gets confused and links to the wrong type of firewire connection

    Here is my suggestion:

    Go into safe mode and device manager and remove all the motu devices
    search the registry and remove all motu references

    See if you can find a TI chipset firewire card
    Disable firewire networking
    Make sure you have at least SP1 on Vista

    Make sure the during the driver/hardware install that the system FINDS the correct driver, make SURE it is not somehow when it detects the hardware, going to the wrong driver. When you connect the device to the system, it should say NEW HARDWARE found, and then take you to the find a driver process.

    Again I am not a motu expert but typically this is the generic sort of problems that you get with firewire devices

    I went to the tech support database for MOTU and here is a comment on installing drivers:

    Proper installation of MOTU drivers under Windows

    Boot up your PC without the MOTU product connected/installed. If there is a chance there are older drivers for the product installed on your PC, remove these using the "Add/Remove Programs" (XP) or "Programs & Features" (Vista) control panel. Install the latest drivers for your MOTU product. Reboot the computer with the MOTU product attached/installed. Windows should bring up a plug and play wizard. Click through this wizard. If, upon completion of the first Wizard, a second and third Wizard appear, go thru these as well as this is a normal part of the plug and play process if you have selected multiple driver installations.

    Here is how to check the driver version etc

    How do I find the version number of my MOTU hardware driver?

    Windows

    Go to your system hard drive, then \Windows\system32\drivers. Select the appropriate file:

    * PCI Audio: motuaw.sys
    * USB MIDI: motumidi.sys
    * FireWire/USB Audio: motufwa.sys

    Right-click it and choose "Properties." For Windows XP, under the Properties window "Version" tab, you'll find a line labeled "File Version"; for Windows Vista, under the Properties window "Details" tab, you'll find a line labeled "Product Version."

    Hope this helps

    It might be worth trying to install it on another XP based system or try to borrow a firewire card, they are not all that expensive and if you can get one with the TI chipset that MIGHT help

    I will, and the original chipset is a TI chipset so That might help. I will try when we get back from the holidays. I left all my trouble at the theatre for this week.
