Sound f/x - I can't find...

I can't seem to find sounds from The Diary of Anne Frank by Goodrich and Hackett. At the end of their play book, they have a list of sounds cues (and very specific ones). Accompanied by this play book, there was apparently a record that had all of these cues on it.

I was wondering if any of you could help me track down something (possibly a torrent if it comes down to it) with all of the sound cues.

If needed, I can provide the list of cues.

Or just make your own. First thing I do when I get a script is black out are design notes and stage directions.

We can help you find sound effects, but not the same thing that would be provided with the script. I highly suggest you search on here (or just google) for several free royalty free sound effects. Or, make you own. Those will probably sound more like what you want then what you would find online, and will be a very interesting project. It's not too hard, and it would make things easier in that you don't need to pay for anything.

If you provide a list, we can certainly point you in the right direction.

The sound effects discs supplied by the publishers are often pretty terrible anyway.

There are a whole lot, but the most complicated one might be this. In one sound effect, the script calls for "Carillon and ships' whistles, Clock strikes 6, children playing, street organ." It seems like certain ambiance sounds being played over top of each other, I imagine. And that's just the first cue. Continuing down the list:

Street and canal sounds You'd have to decide what you want this to sound like. You could try a nearby highway or after school while people are boarding busses.

Bombers overhead This probably needs to come from a website, or possibly a good movie that didn't have background music playing.
Streetcar Probably hard to do. streetcar noise.
Marching men Same as other, find a few people to wear boots and wal across the stage.
Ships' whistles Again? :eek:

Quality Ideas. This list of sound cues is realistically fairly easy to make yourself. Spending a bit of time with google and some sound effects collections (your library might have them, or your director/TD) will help you with some of them, the ones you dont know what they are, google it. For example, it took me 2 searches to find out what kind of whistle would be used in a harbor. Not what one actually is, but a basic idea of it. That is what artistic license is. In fact, I would repeat my earlier point that you really dont have to use only those sound effects or all of those sound effects. In fact, it might be more effective to have sound effects running for the duration of the show to provide thematic elements, background noise and to punctuate action. Really, thats your call. I am not a sound designer, but I really kind of am bothered when the sound effects just kind of come out of nowhere, without any background to justify them. Just a personal thing. Also, a door being battered down will have more cracking and tearing in its sound than Chase mentioned. For your chimes, you might be able to talk to a local monastery or church with a full bell tower in it to play these for you, I have had churches allow us to record things at their church in exchange for a "special thanks to the Dominican Sisters of wherever" in your program, which if you record all your church effects at that place anyhow, you want to do anyhow. In addition, consider while recording and mixing sound effects that a "real" sound is not always the "best" sound. You might need to EQ and layer sounds to make more full and "more proper" SFX, even if those dont actually sound like the real thing.
