    Default I can't find...

I can't seem to find sounds from The Diary of Anne Frank by Goodrich and Hackett. At the end of their play book, they have a list of sounds cues (and very specific ones). Accompanied by this play book, there was apparently a record that had all of these cues on it.

I was wondering if any of you could help me track down something (possibly a torrent if it comes down to it) with all of the sound cues.

If needed, I can provide the list of cues.

Or you could purchase the disk from the publishing company. We here at controlbooth don't condone or encourage piracy.

Or just make your own. First thing I do when I get a script is black out are design notes and stage directions.

We can help you find sound effects, but not the same thing that would be provided with the script. I highly suggest you search on here (or just google) for several free royalty free sound effects. Or, make you own. Those will probably sound more like what you want then what you would find online, and will be a very interesting project. It's not too hard, and it would make things easier in that you don't need to pay for anything.

If you provide a list, we can certainly point you in the right direction.

The sound effects discs supplied by the publishers are often pretty terrible anyway.

    Try freesound.org.

There are a whole lot, but the most complicated one might be this. In one sound effect, the script calls for "Carillon and ships' whistles, Clock strikes 6, children playing, street organ." It seems like certain ambiance sounds being played over top of each other, I imagine. And that's just the first cue. Continuing down the list:
    Ships' Whistles
    Ships' whistles
    Quarter hour chime
    Marching feet
    Children playing and singing
    Carillon melody--then click striking 8
Ships' Whistles (there probably is only a need for two different of these)
    Street and canal sounds
Car coming to stop, pause, then starts away
    Bombers overhead
    Streetcar
    Marching men
    Ships' whistles
Drunken Soldier singing "Lili Marlene," Girl's high giggle
    Footsteps on cobblestone
    Sound of heavy boots
    Planes high overhead
    Ships's whistles
    Streetcar passing
    Dog barking
    Dog barking
Feet running downstairs (this doesn't seem necessary)
    Ships' Whistles
    Carillon chimes (hymn)
    German band
    Children playing, whistles in distance
    Clock strikes 9 o'clock--melody first
    Harbor whistles
    German band playing Viennese waltzes
Car coming to a stop--then another
    Heavy electric bell clanging
    Electric bell--long peal
    3rd clang from electric bell
    Door being battered down
    Boots run upstairs
    Second door being battered through
    Boots clump upstairs
Blows from rifle butt crashing into door, shouted commands in German

Find all the sounds you like and use Garageband or Audacity to play them together.Continuing down the list:
Ships' Whistles ships whistle sound Sound Dog has some good ones.
    Ships' whistles
Quarter hour chimeFind a friend in the band who can play the chimes. Record that. Almost anyone could play that.
Marching feetRecord yourself and a group of friends walking on the stage at the same time. We have good threads if you search for capturing feet noises.
Children playing and singing I would expect the high school will have enough students to record that.
Carillon melody--then click striking 8 [Same as the chime advice. Google is always an option.
Ships' Whistles (there probably is only a need for two different of these)
Street and canal sounds You'd have to decide what you want this to sound like. You could try a nearby highway or after school while people are boarding busses.
Car coming to stop, pause, then starts away I'm sure a friend has a truck that would make a good enough noise to record.
Bombers overhead This probably needs to come from a website, or possibly a good movie that didn't have background music playing.
Streetcar Probably hard to do. streetcar noise.
Marching men Same as other, find a few people to wear boots and wal across the stage.
    Ships' whistles Again?
Drunken Soldier singing "Lili Marlene," Girl's high giggle Choir tenor, female actor.
Footsteps on cobblestone Do you have tile floors anywhere in the school?
Sound of heavy boots Size 14 boots make a very loud noise when dropped.
Planes high overhead Probably a good place for a recording found online.
    Ships's whistles
    Streetcar passing
Dog barking Record yours (or someone elses) dogs barking. Doorbells and nocking are almost guaranteed.
    Dog barking
Feet running downstairs (this doesn't seem necessary) I'm going to hazard a guess that your school has at least one staircase.
    Ships' Whistles
    Carillon chimes (hymn) Possibly online
German band Probably online, unless you are real good friends with the band teacher/director.
Children playing, whistles in distance Same as above, but with a whistle added (possible in Garageband or Audacity.
Clock strikes 9 o'clock--melody first Chimes from the band, or google. Clock strikes 9 sound effect
Harbor whistles Is this different from a regular whistle?
German band playing Viennese waltzes Same with the German band above.
Car coming to a stop--then another Friend with a big truck sound, just cut short.
    Heavy electric bell clanging <
Electric bell--long peal <- I don't know what you want these to sound like, so you should do what you think is best. Try a few things and if not, then move to online sources.
3rd clang from electric bell <
Door being battered down Find a door to take off it's hinges (not one from the school, a spare you have for sets if available) and then push it over.
Boots run upstairs Those stairs mentioned earlier?
Second door being battered through find another different door, or adjust things like EQ on the first track for the second.
    Boots clump upstairs
Blows from rifle butt crashing into door, shouted commands in German A german student, and a person to hold a piece of plywood and a person to hold the gun.
    My opinions are in red.

Quality Ideas. This list of sound cues is realistically fairly easy to make yourself. Spending a bit of time with google and some sound effects collections (your library might have them, or your director/TD) will help you with some of them, the ones you dont know what they are, google it. For example, it took me 2 searches to find out what kind of whistle would be used in a harbor. Not what one actually is, but a basic idea of it. That is what artistic license is. In fact, I would repeat my earlier point that you really dont have to use only those sound effects or all of those sound effects. In fact, it might be more effective to have sound effects running for the duration of the show to provide thematic elements, background noise and to punctuate action. Really, thats your call. I am not a sound designer, but I really kind of am bothered when the sound effects just kind of come out of nowhere, without any background to justify them. Just a personal thing. Also, a door being battered down will have more cracking and tearing in its sound than Chase mentioned. For your chimes, you might be able to talk to a local monastery or church with a full bell tower in it to play these for you, I have had churches allow us to record things at their church in exchange for a "special thanks to the Dominican Sisters of wherever" in your program, which if you record all your church effects at that place anyhow, you want to do anyhow. In addition, consider while recording and mixing sound effects that a "real" sound is not always the "best" sound. You might need to EQ and layer sounds to make more full and "more proper" SFX, even if those dont actually sound like the real thing.
