Default O1V96/ADAT

So I have decided to take the plunge and purchase a Yamaha 01V96 (most likely used). I have done some googling and I can't find a case that fits them. I know they can be rackmounted but I don't want to do that since I like being able to easily remove my mixers from their cases. I know they don't fit cases designed for the original 01V so was wondering if anyone knew where I could find one which would fit it. I'll get a custom case if I have to but I would rather avoid that if possible do to $$$. Also, I'm going to get a Behringer ADA8000 to use with its internal ADAT ports. I was looking on monoprice and I noticed that they had really cheap toslink cables. Are these interchangeble with ADAT cables or do I have to spend 10x more. Finally, what is the maximum run of ADAT? Could I put the ADA8000 50' away from the mixer and connect it via ADAT to use as a digital snake of sorts?

The Toslink cables are the same as the ADAT you refer to. I believe it is limited to 10 meters in length for a reliable signal.
I also found these case. I bought one from the same place years back for a different sort of mixer, and I was very happy with the quality of it.

Good to hear that the cable will work. The case you linked to, as is the case with other cases on eBay that I saw, is actually for the original 01v and when you read the dims they don't match the 01v96.

Cables -- I use Belkin PureAV for home theater and also for my ADA8000s. I'm sure most Toslink cables will work fine (I bought some really cheapo ones that worked as well), so buy a spare or two if you're concerned about breakage.

Case -- I can't remember why but I bought a soft case, Gator G-MIX-L 1822, which houses the unit nicely but needs a stiff board under the zipper top for added protection. Fine for me since I keep it stored safely in the garage and don't use it much, but if I had to do it over again I'd probably try the ATA case listed in eBay.

ADAT and Toslink (SPDIF) are both using the same cables as noted. They are both an LED visible red optical source (safer but less bandwidth than the IR used with "proper" fibre systems) and most cables are a plastic fibre. You can get a glass fibre for these and that would probably permit the distance you are after. It will however be fibre fragile and fibre finnicky. Note also that because it's a non standard product, it will carry a correspondent price tag...

Although it would seem to be the standard, I consider ADAT/TosLink to be the interface of last resort, as even with short fiber the audio performance suffers as compared to ATT/ST, AES, and S/PDIF (I've never used Tascam).

Just an update: I did get an 01V96 for a hair over twelve hundred including a doghouse case and I am in love with it. Combined with studio manager it is really easy and fast to use and perfect for my theatre work. Anyway, I am using it with standard toslink cables that I got from monoprice and they are working really well for 25' runs.

Welcome to the club

Fyi, I already have two ada8000s (and the my16at card) but for the third ADA I'm looking at getting a Presonus Firestudio 2626 so I can also have ADAT digital playback capabilities as will as multi-track recording to the PC. It's a bit pricier than the ADA8000 but for the price I think it's worth getting one.
