Combine all the tracks to mono in Audacity and use just the left side of your device?
Also, you might be able to find a CD or DVD player with a "Mono" function that'll combine the tracks for you. |

you could get yourself a small mixer and use it to combine the l and r signals

For this you could likely get away with just dropping the right channel of the source...
Else use a resistive combiner in the Y and you will not be violating the rules... |

If you cannot build your own resistive summer, an ART AV Direct will do this, and has a street price of around $50.

Since the ART AV Direct is apparently mic level out and you noted wanting line level, you might also try STD-600 Passive Audio Divider/Combiner - 600 Ω. Or any small mixer as Sharyn suggested, that could also provide some ability to compensate for any differences in channel levels.
