IRC Chatroom

Hey everyone,

Just had the idea of creating an IRC chatroom for us to be able to chat realtime with people on the forums. I feel this would help us to be able to chat on a more personal level, rather than the standard forum posts.

I was wondering what you guys think...and more importantly, what Admin thinks (forgive me, I've forgotten your username lol).

I'm regularly on IRC and have already learnt how it is run, and have also made a webpage which has a java-based IRC client for a game I play.

If you would like this, please let me know. I already have a java client ready to install you would like it...let me know if you like it and I'll send you it and you could upload it to controlbooth.com

We've had one in the past with mixed reaction. I can't use IRC as that would violate the Terms of Service for my hosting provider. Let me look up a flexible and low-bandwidth solution and maybe we can see about a chat room.

I already have an webpage provider in mind, pretty easy to upload stuff. If you wish to have a look it is www.webng.com. The format of the url is www2.webng.com/mywebpage.

Sorry, I don't allow anything for controlbooth to be hosted outside of my control. It's part of being a techie, I'm a control freak. You might even say I'm a controlbooth freak

If I were to do a chat feature I would use jabber as that is a much safer application for (geek-speak alert) non-authenticated users is a heterogeneous environment.

When I said about that provider, I meant that was one available, not that I had already created it. If you like you could ude webng and I'll send you the index.htm file which will contain the chatroom.

I know, but it's a service that resides outside of my domain, and I don't tend to do that. I also don't like to use non-integrated solutions. (where the CB users would have to log-in to another service) Don't worry about suggesting a different solution, I know where to look, however I need to evaluate whether or not a chat room is going to trip school network's content filters. That fact tends to drive most of my decisions on what features I implement. This isn't a just a fan site, it's an educational resource and as such, we try to make sure that we are accessible to students on school computers.

Yeah...I still go to school, so I know the feeling of not being able to access something like this...plus I'm not sure if even my school allows us on chatrooms...meh I can still use it at home...

By the way, I've already created a channel on an IRC Server that I'm on...got permission from the owner of course...just wondering whether you wished to be owner of the channel or not?

PS you can have a look at it if you like...irc://irc.gamesadvantage.com/controlbooth but you need mIRC installed first.

No offense here, harry1989, but I think that dvsDave has made it perfectly clear that he is going to take this one at his own pace and use an internally hosted service.
