    Wrong size pipe problems

Remember, cast iron cheeseboros and scaffolding clamps are NOT rated for overhead suspension or lifting. Only use pipe grid clamps rated by the manufacturer for a pipe grid application.

Power and DMX for new LED fixtures

Combination PC/DMX cables keep a nice clean look on the grid, but you must be extra mindful of how many fixtures you can daisy-chain on the power side. Especially true with 14/3 wire. Check the total current rating and compare to the fixture loads.Be sure to get plenty of DMX-only cable too...

    Young Frankenstein

I second my colleagues. This is not a DIY or student project. You mis-time reweighting the platform and someone could die. You can’t replace people (or your job) after a mistake like that!

    Methods of Splicing Pipe

Well, the point of using PAFs to secure the internal spline is to avoid any shop pre-drilling... because we need to do it all on-site to avoid the cost of shipping the steel around, and to avoid the hours of labor involved in driling holes in steel. With PAFs there's no pre-drilling or even much...

    Methods of Splicing Pipe

Funny thing... we THOUGHT they'd be impossible to disassemble. Turns out a claw hammer and some whacks to set it on the nail head and they pull out without too much fuss.

    Methods of Splicing Pipe

Reviving an old discussion... In the context of splicing battens in either a pipe grid (lots of hanging supports and cross-over clamps at the grid intersections) or in long theatrical battens: has anyone used power-actuated fasteners (PAFs, such as Hilti or Ramset) to secure the outer pipe...

    Max Truss Goal Post span

The answer is simple if you pretend you ignore the truss design for a moment and imagine you & you crew are on site to build it: how do you stand it up? How do you tip up a 20’ stick on end onto (or with) a 250lb base? How do you lift a 30’ span to the top of the posts — and bolt it up? How do...

    Conventional Fixtures Altman 360 ellipsoidal

Sorry to all for having been away from the topic. Long story short, the theatre management is being difficult and unwilling to even credit lighting, much less spend $$ on it -- so my plans to grow a menagerie of oldies but goodies are on hold for now.To answer microstar, my old 6" Century...

    Conventional Fixtures Altman 360 ellipsoidal

Interesting. The units I have are all Medium Prefocus bases. I don't recall ever seeing an old grey Century Leko rigged to accept any kind of bi-pin lamp, much less the HX type. I've only ever lamped them with incandescent (burn base up!) or EGE/EGG halogen lamps. I would not think the lamp...

    Conventional Fixtures Altman 360 ellipsoidal

Thanks for your input Ship. I've been restoring and using these things myself since the 70s, so I know what I am looking for. What I need is the cast base that the socket, whip, etc. attaches too -- the actual "lamp cap." I have plenty of MPF sockets, triangle plates, whips, insulators, and...
