Wanted

I am starting a theatre company that teaches young students and assists small theatre companies with production needs. Does any one know where I can get equipment donated. Mostly looking for sound and lighting things that can be run in a classroom transformed in to a theatre (i.e. Mics, Par 56 and lower lights, control boards) Any ideas are welcome.

It never hurts to ask production houses for their old gear. It may not be worth selling due to its age, so they might donate it to you. It might be easier to apply for grants and buy what you need.

I would definitely recommend going the grant application route. It may be a pain but it'll save you trouble later on. Most of the gear Production companies are willing to donate is pretty beat up and near the end of its life, in most situations. With a grant you can purchase new equipment or gear that is used but still in good condition. Look at companies and businesses in your area for a start. Although if your company is going to be for profit it may be difficult to qualify for grants. Usually Corporate Giving/Philanthropy has pretty strict criteria. It can't hurt to take a look or consider being non-profit.

Local schools can sometimes help out. I'm at a private school and we just donated or sold cheaply a lot of older equipment to some of the public schools and community theaters around here. When I was running community theaters, some of our rental houses gave me a lot of equipment. But that was dependent on the relationship they had with me, not the actual theater. The grant route is always a good way to go.

Any ideas where to start with grants I have looked and do not see any or even know how to start.

Well Start with local corporations in your area. If your a non-profit check your local county or city usually there is some form of community arts grants.
