Chauvet Hurricane Hazer Sound Management

I need to use a Chauvet Hurricane in our black box.Problem is, the fan is pretty damn loud. Any suggestions on how to quiet it down?

Build an added Hose baffle system and stick it outside the black box or backstage somewhere.

Any thoughts on how to attach such a system?

Well I would start with modding the front of the hazer to accept some sort of hose attachment.

The front of the 3d has enough screws where you could make a decent seal. The baffle is so you do get back flow and condensation back in the hazer and clog it up. When I built my last one it was for a Le Maitre fogger with a chiller and it pumped out a lot of fog. Our baffle box was a 1' box. You will have to do the math and find out how much volume you output and that will determine your baffle box size and the travel of your hose. If it has to go a longer distance then your looking at throwing in a fan to help push the haze and making it even more complicated.

From videos on YouTube it looks like it pumps out a moderate amount I would say Make a box between 6 and 8 inches and your going to want to keep it pretty close to the hazer, no more then 2 feet.

I Believe ours is the 2d I was considering building a box to enclose it but Im not sure about heat.

Well That makes it a bit harder since the 2d has that direction thing on top and is open around the output. Concept is still the same if you can seal the output hole.

You could build a box around it, but like you said it will get hot. That all depends on how long your going to run it.

I use the Hurricane 2D all the time. I don't think building a box around it will really solve your problem, because you still need to leave enough room for air intake for the fan, and haze output. Are you using Chauvet haze fluid? I found that their haze formulation only hangs for a minute or two before dissipating. During our most recent Christmas show I went through 4 gallons of fluid over the course of 50 shows, and I couldn't keep haze there. I just switched to froggys fog beamsplitter and during preliminary testing seems to hang much longer. If you can find a fluid with a long haze time, then you only need to run the hazer during loud points of the show. That's been my go-to technique for dealing with the noise.

How has the beamsplitter worked for you? Froggys is normally my go to.

I'm in a black box that holds air pretty well. How is the density when you do get it to stay?

I can get it pretty dense. We just finished final dress for "Grease" which opens tomorrow night. Show came down 5 minutes ago, front door has been wide open, and there is still a pretty good layer of haze hanging in the air.

How much are you going through a night?

It's hard to tell. I think the Hurricane 2D uses a LOT of fluid, and mine just developed a leak. I have found that this hazer is not nearly as good as some units I've used in the past.

That being said, I will check the level tomorrow, and try and figure out how much I've used in the past two days.

I haven't noticed it being fluid hungry. Maybe because it is brand new.

Well, now in addition to it being fluid hungry, it's also sprung a leak (and it's 8 months old!) Using beamsplitter has definitely cut down on usage (I've only gone through one gallon of haze fluid during 33 performances), but I'll definitely be looking at getting a different machine in the near future.
