"Adult" themes and language for HS shows

Being that I have been out of HS for 25 years, how common is this?

We did it in Illinois. When I taught in Georgia the students did it as well for in class scenes, not public performances.

Were there provisions for families who wished to have their kids not be exposed to this type of performance? After all, would rated R movies have been allowed?
