Too bad the sprint/nextel direct connect never caught on, although there was still lag time with that if the network was busy.

Bad, frustrating memories of Nextel direct connect. TOTALLY unreliable. The only time it did work was when you were in the middle of something serious with important people around. Then some moron would come through loud and clear and say something totally inappropriate. Good times...

I've been told that some of the older Nextel handsets can be used off network.
However, I have had no luck with my experiments testing it.
 
There are a few models of the nextel handsets that will work off network. They call it 'Direct Talk' mode. From my experience using them for communications in this mode, a two way radio like an FRS radio with a headset would work better. Don't try to use vox headsets, make them push the button. Make sure to provide some training to your people too on how to use a radio. It seems like a simple thing to do, but working in communications stuff, it is amazing what people can't figure out.
