Is it possible to send DMX over a TRS 1/4" ?

I have 2 scanners that have a 1/4" input and output. It clearly states that they are DMX. I would assume that it would have to be a tip ring sleeve (TRS)? Would a manufacture do that? They are KLS SE204's that were in my youth room and broken. I asked if I could take them home and fix them, so I am in the process of fixing an extremely old scanner that I don't have any documentation. Lol. Thanks for the help!

Oh, well I opened em' and it is a TRS. Thanks for the Help. Ever heard KLS lights? really small company it looks like.
SE 205 SCANNER

I have to say I've never seen DMX sent through a TRS connector, Are you sure it's not just and Audio IN/OUT ? A picture of the innards would be great, one could easily determine if they connectors go to an audio input or DMX decoder daughter board.

It seems possible from a conceptual point of view.
they do have 3 conductors.

Highly unlikely though.

It's POSSIBLE to send DMX over barbed wire, but I've never seen it used with 1/4" TRS connectors. (And wouldn't use a device that did.)

You could possibly do it but it would be highly unadvised. The likelihood of a failure is high. The wire is not high enough quality to maintain a good signal. There are other possible problems as well. If you aren't worried about how the show looks go for it but I wouldn't do it.

Van, is there a one-hour and seven-minute echo where you are? Maybe it's due to the capacitance of the wire of your Internets? Are you not meeting the RS-485 specifications?:)

I think it's IE8 Beta,
I sent the message and waited and waited and waited, and waited, then I had to go fix something in the theatre, < tech week, you know> when I came back the icon wasn't spinning anymore but I was still on the "reply to thread " page. Weird. 'course you're right, it could be a reflection off of a bad connector on my opto-coupler, causing a slight variance in the timing of the flugal valve. I'll recalibrate my Heisenberg compensator and see if that doesn't resolve the issues of feedback in my positronic matrix. ...... Or something like that :twisted:

< and my google task bar / spell check thingy doesn't work with IE8 Beta either so I'm actually having to use my brain to spell with, yuck>

Re: Is it possible to send DMX over a TRS 1/4%26quot%3B ?

In the link that you provided, it mentioned the model with an XLR connector. It is possible that you have an older model and that they used TRS connectors when they started out, and saw the error in their ways, later changing to XLR.
You say that you have already opened it up, well go one further. Follow the wires from the TRS conector to the PC board and then follow the traces on the board probably thru some very low resistance resistors, and see if the first Integrated circuit that it comes to is a 75176. This is the most common transceiver chip used in RS-485, the electrical protocall used by DMX-512.
Hey have fun with the thing, it is already discarded, what can you lose, and it might be an educational experience for you.

So does anyone remember the old HES data flash? They used LWR protocol, which is another type of RS485 data. They had 1/4" in and outs but then realized what a PITA it was having a bunch of 1/4" to XLR adapters.

Would a manufacture do that?

Based on past experience, manufacturers will do anything to get product on the street. I suppose it's possible to send dmx that way. I guess the easy thing to do would be to build an adapter and find out. Worst case you got some soldering practice in.
