Shure wireless...

If anybody has any leads or experience with the following series, please pm me or let me know.

Shure's U-series-includes U1-bodypack, u4d-dual receiver, and u2-handheld transmitters

Shure's ULX series-ulx1-bodypack, ulx4p-reciever, ulx2-handhelds.

Unfortunately, the U-series (sometimes referred to as the UHF series), is discontinued, simply because shure's UHFR system has come out a few years back.

I cannot afford the UHFR series, and am desperately trying to find the UHF (U series) for my personal use.
I will settle for the widely available ULX series, but really really want the UHF series.

If anybody knows of anybody who has any leftover, trying to get rid of, rental houses, etc etc who may have any UHF-U series, please let me know!!!

Also...for the purpose of the thread, if anybody has any of the equipment and would like to try to convince me to go up to the UHFR or down to the ULX, please, feel free to do so.

I don't think that I have one bad thing to say about the ULX series.
Metal packs would have been nice, but it hasn't been a problem.

A place I work currently has 30 systems in the J1 and M1 bands on the property.
We regularly operate all of them at the same time without issue.

They are easy to program, and you can lock out the controls on the pack and receiver. (ULX-P)

Feel free to PM or E-mail me anytime.

I have 10 ULX and 8 UC packs in my stock. On a regular show, we usually run 16-24 ULX. We have antena distros and paddles on all the sets we use. I would highly suggest adding that to your package, it will make everything much easier to transport and the gear will last longer.

I am also a big fan of the ew100 series from sennheiser. They are all metal packs, no matter the level. They are also much smaller packs then the ULX series. Take a look at them before you go Shure. Sennheiser invented wireless audio, they know what they are doing.

You need to be really really careful if you're looking at buying the Shure UHF series of wireless mics. The UHF series operated primarily in the 700 MHz band, which is now verboten (see the FAQ in this forum). Now, the UB range will let you go down to 692 MHz, but that gives you only 6 MHz to play with - you won't be able to use the rest of the tuning range of the system. The UA range is way up in 700 - close to 800 is and completely unusable.

There were other, lower bandsplits made - such as the M4, but I believe these were sold overseas and you probably won't have much luck finding them.

So, I would highly recommend the ULX series. Yes, the bodypacks are plastic, and yes, the receivers are switching diversity, but all in all it's still a decent wireless system. Get the ULX-P receivers, and you should be good to go for any kind of use you need. Just remember to check the bandsplit when you buy them to make sure you're going to have enough bandwidth for the mics where you need to operate.

I'm well aware of the frequency bands and the UA/UB bands of both systems and using antenna distros and accessories.

More interested in comparisons between UHF and ULX quality.
So far we've come to two conclusions...
-ULX has plastic vs. UHF with metal
-ULX has switching diversity (I will admit, I am not as knowledable on different types of diversity, though I am well aware of WHAT diversity is, so don't give me a definition), while UHF has marcad? somebody confirm please?

Thanks.

Re: Diversity, that sounds about right to me. I believe that MARCAD uses two separate FM receivers/detectors, and that it combines at audio frequency (or something along these lines) Some people claim they can hear a difference. I can't. In fact, Lectrosonics uses switching diversity in their Venue series of receivers and it sounds very good to me.

I think the metal v. plastic is probably a bigger issue than receiver topology.

And as far as the bands go, I just want to make sure you're aware of that issue . I'm assuming you're in the US. If so, just know that you absolutely cannot operate anything above 698 MHz after February 17, 2009. If you're not, then you may not need to worry at all.

Mike

I knew the basics of the MARCAD thing, and just couldn't remember.
Thanks. :] (no sarcasm intended)

I guess metal case would be nice, but honestly its not worth an extra 30 thousand dollars to me, since getting my hands on UHF is gonna be impossible, unless anybody lives or has connections to a country that sells UHF series in the 400-600 range??? HELP ME IF YOU CAN!!!!

I've called every rental place in town, shure directly, trying to find left over UHF series stuff in the M4 or J4 bands, with no luck.

and yeah, I'm in us, and well aware of the 700 mhz cutoff and new regulations.

(As a side note, forgive my jerkishness, I'm considering calling the FCC on our church, (even though I'm one of the techs), and see if they'll confiscate our 700mhz gear, that way we'll HAVE to buy new stuff... :]. Besides, I don't like our finance council, so a nice 7k fine should treat them nicely).

Does anybody know what country the M4 and J4 bands were originally targeted at? Perhaps those countries still have UHF stuff left in stock?

Any help would be great.

Actually, if you're lucky you can get $11k/day/transmitter. :) I doubt they'll confiscate the gear unfortunately, at least now the first time...

So what's the issue? The church refuses to recognize that 700 MHz is going away?

They think that since we're "out in the middle of nowhere" the new regulations don't apply to us.

I'm not the head honcho, but I don't like any of our head honchos, so I guess if they get an 11k fine, that's alright with me.

How would one go about reporting "misuse of 700 mhz band?'"

Except for the fact that I've mentioned several times we need to get new gear, and the series we have is discontinued, so we'd need all new gear.

And there's only three people who even know we're in/gonna be in illegal bands....

You underestimate my abilities.
