SJ 16/3

Does anyone know what this cable is capable of "carrying" safely? I found a bunch in my electrics room from... not long ago because the school is only 8 years old but have never used it. It looks rather thin, but I'm short on cable. If its not safe for what I want to use it for I won't, but that's why I'm asking first.

And I know, consult a qualified electrician.

16/3 is 13 Amp Cable. But I would never put over 10 Amps on it. This is per my qualified journeyman electrician.

1,000 Watts but that is before voltage drop due to length.

Wouldn't use it for more than 3' jumpers especially since its SJ (hard service) and not S (Extra Hard Service) as required for use in jumpers for the stage no matter the gauge.

Probably wouldn't use it at all other than say for clip lights or LED fixture cabling were needed if even than.

Where does it being S instead of SJ come from Shipp? It's not in the NEC as far as I can tell. We used to make all our extensions at the PAC out of 12/3 SJO.

I have to agree with whats been posted. I wouldn't use it for more than 10 Amps, and being SJ and 16 gauge, it's not meant for the rigors of stage use. I agree, good for LED or clip lights, but really it's usually best for for your leaf blower of power drill.

so, yea, you can use it for lighting, but it's one of those practices that shouldn't leave high school.

Well put, I'm usually pretty big on the safety train, so I didn't want to potentially start a fire, hence the asking first. Generally we buy large quantities of cable in the correct gauge for shows.. but this is last minute and on no budget. Cutting the light all together would be the easiest solution I guess.

Good call. My bad, now that I look at it we do use SO cord for our extensions. :) Although we did use SJO when I was the TD at the Austin FAA. Before I knew better. Now I let my journeyman buy all that stuff and he let me know it is for temporary use only. *lol* I stand corrected.
