High School Musical 2

Hi Everyone,

So one of my next big gigs is the Long Island Premiere of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2. I have a couple questions on how to achieve certain effects.

Question #1:

The wall of the orchestra pit is going to be made to look like a pool (like in the youtube video link below). I want to make the water effect that is show in the video. What are some affordable ways I can make this effect. If I need to rent a fixture that should be fine as long as its somewhat affordable.

Any other ideas for the show are appreciated too.

Thanks,
Joe

The simplest way to get what you are looking at here is a gobo and an effects wheel hooked up to an S4 or similar ERS fixture. I have used a MAC700 Spot fixture for this exact effect with good results for some dance shows. The question would be whether or not you have the board, power, programing time, AND need to justify the use of an automated light. see the Gafftaper Method...

Can you give me the model # of gobo that will work. I know the theater has a GAM S4FX Machine.

I have done High School Musical aswell... not really a show I want to do again. But it did sell out every night.

Sorry to hijack here, but I have to:

I have never done it, but feel like its a show every high school should do at least once, to fund their program for the next few years. There is nothing more attractive to an elementary or middle school girl than someone singing a song that Zac Efron sings.

The High School Musical 2 that I'm designing is the LI premiere at a major Long Island regional theater, not my high school. However my high school is the LI premiere of Sweeney Todd: School Edition.

Ok....so my basic plot now over stage is 2 systems of high sides (three areas) using 6x9 fixtues.

So the pasic plot looks like this ( "<" and ">" = 6x9's )

1E - < < > < > >
2E - < < > < > >
3E - < < > < > >
4E - Border Strips

I need to pick 4 colors for the high sides, 2 warms and 2 cools....Any colors in mind? Should the colors be saturated?

That depends entirely on your design. I have never seen HSM much less HSM 2. But Skelton Exotic Sangria is one of my favorite musical colors. A nice true blue (not R80) is nice too. It is a musical, get a Rosco book and go to town!

There is an easier way to do this!
you can rent things which are pre-made water effects,
Most have a colour wheel so you can select the colour and because the constantly rotate (they're ok to run on a dimmer when doing timed X-Fades DO NOT KEEP THEM AT A DIMMED LEVEL FOR ANY PERIOD OF TIME)
If you don't want to run them on a dimmer you can get DMX versions (which are what i tend to use)
they're relatively cheap and some of them have wider beam angles than others so check them out!
Instaed of using gobo's to crate the effect they use different panes of glass to 'ripple'
Below is an example from american DJ, i know for a fact Chauvet make this type of unit called the Abyss it's a good fixture and i have some in my hire stock
I know they're classed as DJ fixtures but it's the effect you want,
Goodluck! if you want any more info PM me

American DJ H2O 250EX Water Effect Light from zZounds.com!
