how to succeed!

hey all,

new to the site, but it seems like a wealth of information! i'm the LD for my high school's theater, and this year we're doing how to succeed in business without really trying. i've been LD for their past 7 shows, but this one is a little different. i have a design down, but am stuck at where some cool tricks could come in because the show is set in an office, so some things may not be appropriate. like i said, i've got a plot down that i think will look great, but im curious what other people would do. after joining this site about... 5 minutes ago, i've seen that so many people do different things. so for anyone who has ever done this show, my question is what was your plot like and what cool things can be done with it?

Hi Joe. Stop over in the New Member's forum and introduce yourself there. But as to your question:

This is generally the kind of questions we want you to ask. Too many people pop on here and say "here's my show - design it for me!" which just doesn't work. However we can't help you out with your "cool tricks" unless we know what they are . So give us a brief description of how you have designed the show. Then describe what kind of special looks you want to create on stage, and people will be able to help you. The more specific the better. If you have some specific scenes or moments where you want to do something interesting with the light, then post what you want to do and we should be able to help you achieve that look.

Its a fun show, and its not your typical office. Don't go in thinking office space. What kind of world do you envision for Mr. Finch?

the design i have laid out is pretty basic...
a single tone (probably bastard amber) from FOH for the whole stage.
a cool and a warm from (pardon the technical terms) hang points located on the left and right wall of the auditorium.
top, side (both directions), and back light from onstage.
most of this will be coming from source fours and source four pars.
i was considering getting in some color scrollers (wybron cxi's) because i thought they'd be useful in setting the mood since the show takes place during many different times of day.
i've got a pattern wash setup as well, just to add some texture during the later scenes, and also a front wash with star patterns in them for the party.
i'm also really hoping to find a world wide wicket gobo of some sort.
that's as far as i've gotten so far.
i'm not really posting this with any specific questions in mind, rather i'm just curious what other people would do.

In terms of "finding" a World Wide Wicket gobo, just make it. You can easily make your own gobos out of aluminum pie plates, or aluminum soda cans, and an x-acto knife. The soda can is harder to cut, but holds up better.

In terms of cool tricks and fun colors I think you have the perfect show to work with. The play is set in an office, but nothing about it is serious or realistic. It is bright, 60s and tongue in cheek.
Just a few places when you could look into something fun:
The rooftop party
The Treasure Hunt show filming
"Rosemary" (the song not the character).

I could list dozens of other moments where I would put a special lighting something, but like has been said, I don't want to design the show for you. Go back and look at those moments closely though and see if they don't inspire you.

It sounds like you got a good concept for this show. When I LDed this show in college I think I did something similar to what your talking about.
