Design time passing light

hello,
so i am designing the light for our production of 12 angry men, and i need to have a light come through a window (with the shades down). at the beginning of the play its morning and at the end its dust. i was thinking of using an ellipsoidal and just dimming it as the play goes on. but also was thinking about using a fresnel. i was wondering which would be best. oh and all our fixtures are colortran.

The Choice between ERS and fresnel for this situation is mostly based on how much control you need of the light. If you need to make precise cuts to the edges of the window then an ERS will work better. If you just need to push light through the window and don't care about spill in the back then a fresnel is fine. I would also suggest you consider hanging multiple fixtures just in case you want to vary the colors.

You might want to look at doing a few fixtures to give some "movement" to the light. As the play progresses, slowly work the lights around. I have seen some people move lights around on rovers to accomplish this as well. You might also want to play with color a bit. otherwise, I usually back light windows with lekos just to control spill. Play around with it, I am sure you will walk away with something new in your back pocket.

These guys have you covered pretty well. I would play with color and position if you can. If not, and if they wall faces upstage, then I use whatever, if the wall is visible, then an ERS is the only way to go.

thank you for helping me make up my mind. i decided on using the fresnel, now i was wanting to hang it from the flat that i have sitting behind the window. its realy a platform standing up on its side. but i was wondering if there would be any problems with it being attached to a 2x4.

Probably fine to attach to a 2x4, however, will that give you enough of an angle to actually get light through the window?

yes it will and it really doesnt need to protrude through the window just needs to look like sunny day out side.

*laughs at the thought of someone using a wood screw to try and hold up an 8" Fresnel*
