School Show

So i am the Lighting Designer for a concert my high school is holding. I am debating on a few different issues and figured i would get some input from the folks on cb. So here it goes:

1. I am definitely using moving lights, probably around 15, but the question is what company. I have used martins before, but i am leaning towards vari-lite. I will probably be using 6 washes and the rest profiles.

2. Hog, GrandMA, or Ion...... I have background knowledge in all three of these consoles. I am a fan of GrandMA, but i have heard good things about the other two.

3. I will also be using conventional lighting in this show, so i know that the MA console and Ion and do conventional, i am not sure about the hog.

4. Computer based vs. console. Regardless of what method i would get the wing if computer based is better.

Let me know what you think. Its a state funded event so a have a decent amount of money at my exposure. How often do you hear that?!

1. Vari-Lites are great, I love the gobos. 2500 spots are great fixtures for a 700W profile. Martins are good as well - but I like the increased zoom and better gobo selection of the Vari-Lites.

2. GrandMA all the way if you can get it. 3. The GrandMA will also do conventionals well. 4. Well I said GrandMA, so get the console if you can.

The hog runs conventionals or "desk channels" just fine. Sitting in a show right now ran by a hogpc and a 150 or so conventionals, 30 or so colorblasts, and 15 or so movers. Get whatever your rental company supports best if you are not married to any console.

Yeah, Grand MA if you can get it, but the Hog is an awesome console as well.

I love Vari-Lites, they are right up there with HES gear, Martins are great as long as you are renting and not buying. Also get them to throw in a spare or two if you go with the Martins.

I personally think that your best bet would be to run a hog 1000, they are great boards and give you outstanding control of the show. If you can't get a 1000 a 500 is ur next best bet. As far as lights themselves go it doesn't real matter. thats more of a personal choice and u can do what you want.

What sort of concert is it?
That will give you an idea of what needs to be accomplished.
See what gobos are available for each moving light and which you would more like to see on the stage. VLs naturally have a better optics/brightness than most in the industry so if thats what you are looking for....
As far as the console goes, what are you comfortable running? If you are comfortable on all those consoles, then thats where my original question comes into play.
If its a straight forward school music concert, than any of the consoles you mentioned are great. In my opinion tho if is it something more rock-ish and off the cuff, you want something with alot of options that you can build and build and build and be able to call up looks and effects at the drop of a hat. Ergo the MA would be your best bet. However if you aren't confident running it, you would be better off with the console that you are comfortable with.

1 - Full-size grandMA, CWANA, no NSPs, @ $800
6 - MAC2000 Wash @ $350/ea
9 - VL3000 Spot @ $450/ea
1 - 24way 208V ML PD $100/ea
1- Power Cable Package + Feeder $100/lot
1- Data Cable Package + Opto $100/lot
= +/- $7300 per week. (Roughly averaged prices across the country.)

Thanks Guys,
I really appreciate hearing everyone opinions and ideas about this subject. Being able to feed off others is so important. I am going to fun the MA Full Size, just because i absolutely love that board. As far as lights go, i will probably go with 16 VL 3500, 8wash and 8 profile spots. I have not actually used VL's but have always wanted to use them. I have seen them in action, and i just feel like they are better lights than martins. But is all personal preference and what I'm comfortable with. Thanks for the help!

I'd go with 3000 spots for a concert, because you usually don't need framing shutters, and want more gobos to choose from - and as far as I know, framing shutters and -1 gobo wheel are the main changes in the VL3500 from the VL3000. Oh, and one of the gobo wheels on the 3500 is a static wheel - on the 3000 spot all 3 gobo wheels rotate.
