!Please Help the Glossary!

Suggested Terms (not Topics. Entries requiring more than a simple definition should be placed in the Collaborative Articles section.) Pictures are always helpful (be sure to credit the source). "See also this website for more information." is handy also. Make the definition your own; do not plagiarize. While quoting from wikipedia.com or similar is frowned upon, we realize that sometimes it is the best or only source. If you do copy from another page, use /QUOTE tags, (like {quote}quoted text{/quote}, Replace all braces {} with brackets [].), and post the URL of the site.
To define a term, just click the term in red below. Clicking on a word or phrase that has a yellow dotted underline, like LEKO, will take you to an article that already exists for viewing and editing.
Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to add to this list also. Come across a term you think should be included? Just edit this page, and put the term inside {wiki}tags{/wiki}. Replace all braces {} with brackets [].
Someone will get around to it eventually.

re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

So is the trick to making the link just adding the asterisk and Brackets?

Re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

08/08/23-DL edit: ...Theatre Lighting: An Illustrated Glossary. Albert F. C. Wehlburg. Drama Book Specialists, 1975. [Who incidentally says that piece of sheet steel one places in the gate of an ERS is erroneously called a "gobo". Must be a film guy.]

Yup. A film guy or gal would call that a cookie.

Re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

Added an entry for Achromatic.

Will get to dichroic (filter) when I can...

Re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

Thank you philhaney, for your recent contributions.

Now who else wants to play? Perhaps someone who feels he/she cannot contribute to CB monetarily, but wants to contribute in another way?

Re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

I nominate all these for removal from the list. I have gone through and double-asterisked them (**) in the original article. If there is a second...

TD
Rosco
Lighting Supervisor
Crescent Wrench
Dimmer
Circuit
Channel
Gaseous Discharge
Fluorescence
Proscenium
Black Box Theatre
Thrust
House
Electric
Curtains
Floor Pocket
Batten
Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlight
LEKO
Fresnel
Props
Dead Hung

Edit: Could we create a re-direct article that takes Black Box to Black Box theatre? Nobody types Theatre, so just having Black Box will link up. Same for C-Wrench to Crescent Wrench, S4 to Source Four, ME to Master Electrician, and Marley to Marley Floor?

In the spirit of linking acronyms to full terms, then put the info for TD into Technical Director and then redirect TD to the new wiki entry?

With all due respect, why?

I can easily see people not knowing what these terms mean and looking to our glossary for the answer.

I've been involved with theatre (or theater) for 24 years now, and to this day a lay person will ask me where to plug someting in on our stage at church, and when I tell them a floor pocket they look up at me (in the booth) and say, "What's a floor pocket?"

For clarification: I nominate them for removal from the "needs to be added to" list. Or at least, that's what I thought this sentence was asking:

please check by posting a comment before removing posts you are unsure about.

Oh, sorry. I thought you ment removal from the glossary. :(

23 Aug 08- derekleffew edit: Here's some more terms, should some young enterprising and motivated individual(s) feel an urge to contribute. Most of these terms were taken from Theatre Lighting: An Illustrated Glossary. Albert F. C. Wehlburg. Drama Book Specialists, 1975. Stuff to tell new Crew (Collaborative Article deleted?) Nope, just renamed. See http://www.controlbooth.com/forums/collaborative-articles/9080-advice-new-technicians.html.

Re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

To add a term so that clicking on it will automatically create a new article, use the wiki tags. Example: wiki *term* /wiki (with brackets, of course.) If the article exists already, the link will be yellow; and if there is no article it will turn up red. Red links will automatically create a new article when clicked on.

Re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

Above removed from Please Help, as I think it's going a little too far.

Request for automatic re-direct entries (if the average user can do this, dvsDave?)
S4 (linked [re-drected] to SourceFour) [Done, solely for testing purposes.]

ME (linked [re-drected] to Master Electrician)
Marley (linked [re-drected] to Marley Floor)
HES (linked [re-drected] to High End Systems)
Q2Q (linked [re-drected] to Cue To Cue)
Also, create a new article called Technical Director, move the info from TD there, and then have TD re-direct to Technical Director.
Yes, the average user CAN create automatic redirects (I did it with S4 as a test), but I'm not sure it's a good idea.
1. The more terms we have in the wiki, the more "false yellows" (party becomes PARty) we are going to get. Notice that PAR is not listed, but re-directs to P.A.R., which I think was a (failed) effort to minimize the false yellows.
2. How far do we take this? Our industry is full of acronyms; we had a list going at one point--I don't remember where, ah, here, and http://www.controlbooth.com/forums/glossary/8492-tlas.html. Do we link EVERY acronym to an entry for the full name? I like our current method of listing the acronym and then defining the full term by underlining where the letters come from.
3. I'm afraid of re-directs, as I can't find a list of them. Perhaps they're only visible to the site mechanics, or dvsDave?

Personally, I think that if there is a common acronym for something that is often used or a shorter form of an obscure topic (marley, for instance) that people probably don't know about - especially beginners, we should have a link. Alright, perhaps S4 is a bit too far. But something like RTA? I had no clue what that was, so I had to google it. Googling acronyms isn't the greatest. And I still have to create an entry... I mean, doing this will make the glossary much more user friendly to the average user. While the sometimes excessive yellow links can get annoying to older users, it's about education, isn't it? The automatic linking is a great tool for new members, especially those who don't know how to use the glossary yet.

Re: a _Please Help the Glossary!

I'm sorry, but I don't understand the wisdom of redirecting "Marley" to "Marley Floor." The good aspect of the wiki is the flagging of TLAs in posts. If someone writes "...take the RTA," which they're much more likely to do than "...take the Rapid Transit Authority" (I just sort of helped your case, didn't I?), it will be flagged in yellow, so anyone who doesn't know can simply click on the link. (I don't think this works for multi-word phrases.)
Similarly, meandering through the glossary listing allows one to click on the TLA to find the actual origin. I'm certainly willing to go along with whatever the majority, or Dave, whichever is greater, decide. Does anyone else have any strong opinions on this topic?

Unfortunately, I can't post my acronyms for the words FUN and SOAP without violating certain language policies.
