Super Bowl Sunday.

Any comments on the half time show yesterday? I myself was not that impressed. I Thought the mix was ok, however I did notice that the lead guitarists' solo wasn't there. I think as the sound guy I would not be that excited to do a mobile show like that. To much to do in such a little amount of time.

Anyone know any more about this type of show? Why does it seem like there are tons of problems with these Super Bowl shows?

as you said...lots to do and very little time to do it all

with all the A-list celebs involved, plus it being set up on a stage in the middle of a stadium...im sure there is very very little in terms of rehersals/run throughs

then, being set up during the length of a commercial break, im sure some things can go wrong

plus, again, the celebs can never keep things the way their supposed to be, so adding the element of the performers ad-libbing and making stuff up

and it makes for a rocky show:lol:

At least on my end, I thought Bruce's vox should have been higher. Oh well.

They did have quite a lot of wireless going on that stage, though. Looked like all Shure UHF-R gear. Kudos to the RF guys (probably PWS, but I don't know for sure).

My little speaker system is no judge, so I'll say it was fine for the playback system I heard it on.

Lighting was mediocre. My impression was they pulled back on some of the glitz because it was Bruce, who isn't much on that stuff, and that since the economy is slow they'd back off a little to fit in with the times, considering all the pipe AIG took for their spa days, etc.

In audio for broadcast video you typically have to mix assuming a wide variety of playback systems, from mondo home theater systems to the little speakers in some TVs. Then there may be compression or other processing applied along the way of the signal getting to the viewers. Fianlly, you have how the viewers have setup their listening systems, even the smallest TV usually has bass and treble controls and home theater systems are typically far from a flat response. There are simply many variables and compromises involved.

Brad is along my line of thinking for that. What the "house" mix was like and what the TV feed/mix was like were probably two completely different animals. It's hard to tell by TV feed alone. After watching enough of those, the TV feed seems to suffer many times.

And then there is the issue of what the broadcast feed sounded like in the truck versus how it came to you at home. Remember that TV stations apply compression amongst other processing to their outgoing feeds to avoid messy problems with overmodulation. And given that the average OB truck might have a couple of grand's worth of Genelecs or the like and a link straight into the console whereas you have more variables in between...
