LED pars

I have been looking at some of the cheapo LED pars, and a couple of the ones I have looked at seem to flicker when slowly dimming up and down. It seems as though they are not using 256 steps of control for the LEDs but maybe only 32 or 64. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have used the Irradiant cans. There will always be steppy dimming and a falloff at the end of the dimming curve. This is generally the case of all low-price cans.

I use the Showtec LED pars (£30 ea.) and they're fine i mean on any LED par in this price range you're going to get drops at the end but if you don't want to pay £300 a fixture then you have to learn to live with it

My LED PARs (36 3W LEDs, $549 ea) and 252 wash fixtures (252 10mm LEDs, $218 ea) dim just fine with no flicker.

The new Vivid II I posted about last week offers a smooth dimming curve and is a direct replacement for the ColorBlast Powercore.

I've seen this Vivid II fixture added to several smaller regional rental inventories, and would really love to get my paws on one to try out. For the price, it looks like a killer fixture. I really like the form factor established by Color Kinetics, as much as I dislike the CK power supply deal.

Many of the 4 channel leds have the dimmer channel like this,from 0 to150 = dimmer, and from 151 to 255 it strobes at different rates. This may be why you see flickering when dimming from 255 to 0.
Try not going beyond 150 if you want no flickering or strobing effect.

All of the American DJ line as well as All of the Chauvet line (With the exception for the 1-Watt LED models) are made by Neo-Neon, the Parents company of Irradiant. It all comes out of the same factory in China. Just figured I'd throw that out there in case you didn't know.

And yes, they do seem a bit jumpy. The only fixtures that aren't very jumpy are the Neo-Neon 1 Watt and 3 Watt fixtures, but even those aren't perfect. The Colorado series is pretty smooth.

Please check your facts. I've spoken to Chuck, President of ADJ and other than a few Geni movers they handled years ago, they have never purchased any product from Neo-Neon. I believe (but can't confirm) that their main supplier is Dortron.

From the looks of the Dortron website, BillESC is correct. It looks like Dortron is also Wiedamark's supplier, and it looks like Dortron might be the ones behind the Chauvet 1W fixtures. Also looks like Dortron does at least some of Elation's LED fixtures.

I have the colorado 3's and I am very happy with them. Very smooth dimming and very bright, I got them two months ago and they will be going on their first true run next week on a show to replace 12 par cans. The build quality is great, although more expensive they are well worth it especially considering they are made for outdoor use as well. I am not a big fan of dj light companys however Chauvet seems to be coming a more known player in LED fixtures.
