Hanging a source four. Access?

Everyone seems to be forgetting that he doesn't want to give up any intensity, and would like to even gain a little of possible. Going with a long life lamp is going to drop it quite a bit, and from what little I've seen the LED source 4 is at it's very best comparable to a 575w lamped source 4.

In that case the best option is going to be going HID. I think I have seen a douser for an HID S4 before, might have been a custom job, but gaining intensity and life, thats the best option, not LED. For access, a large ladder is going to be the best option, any sort of hoisting mechanism is going to be expensive or seriously jenk. Im sure some sort of solution could be found for working on ice, seeing as they must have to do other things while the ice is there...

Getting back to the original question of access, Rigging it on a hoist is possible, but more complicated than attaching a cable to the light and lifting it up. If you have any sort of tilt to it, it will hang weird. You would need to rig some sort of small batten with at least 2 lift cables. This will prevent it from rotating. You would then safety to the batten. You would have to include enough electrical cable to reach the floor, and some way to lift that up too. You might check around other venues in the area. They might have a more portable Genie or something that you could get cheaper and on less notice for changes. Some of the genie lifts are really easy to load into the back of a pickup truck.

After reading through this thread I have noticed a couple things. First, given the OP's application (flashing a logo when a goal is scored) there is no way this can be done with a discharge lamp/CDM Source four. Unless you have a controllable shutter assembly the lamp just takes too long to warm up.

For something like this an old used 575W watt moving light would be great, but probably out of the budget.

I have to second the suggestion of just getting one of the tall Little Giant ladders. While they are far from my favorite, you can get them in heights that will get you to 20' and they will be stable on the ice. You will probably need to put some padding on the feet so they don't freeze to the ice, but it would besafe and stable. Then you don't have to wait for the lift to be available.

It looks like people have given lots of information about hoists, but making that happen (safely) is probably far beyond your budget. LED units are great, but they are very new andexpensive and right now no one has a good way to compare the brightness of them except by what you see in a side-by-side demo. Also, LED would require some kind of controller, if you don't already have one, this is more expense.

Just my thoughts.

Secondly, as for the Source Four LED.
ETC will be showing it on the Expo floor at USITT.
Regional offices now have demo units. Contact your regional office or a dealer for a demo.

I'll be at USITT this year (anyone else?). I'll be sure to take some photos and get as much info as I can from them. Any specific questions anyone wants me to ask?

I have a friend that had a similar situation, I had the pleasure to witness. Done at local youth Hockey rink. Flatbed wrecker parked under hanging position, 14 foot platform ladder in center of flat bed. hung instrument. After wrecker left, swept loose debris, a little water left to freeze on stubborn dirt came off with ice scrapper. Rink Master and Zamboni driver was impressed with how undamaged the ice was. Had to repeat process to get instrument down after game that night for show back in my theater the following week. can't forget the 200foot 12 gauge cord to power it, nor the comp tix for wrecker driver.
