Control/Dimming How to connect a preset lightboard to your Android device

Hi guys!

I want to know if it is possible to control theater lighting from your Android. My HS Auditorium uses a Leprecon LM-850 preset light board to control all of the lights. The light board uses a MIDI output, NOT a DMX output.

Now a little info about my Android...I have an HTC Rezound.

I want to be able to control the lighting from my phone. Any ideas on how to hook up a MIDI lightboard to my Android?

You can't control lights from your phone with a leprecon board... But there is software out there that you can control lights with. but it is DMX software.
such as chamsy's and showexpress... but even with that, you probally couldn't get those into your system... sorry bud

Assuming the LM-850 accepts MIDI in, if you can figure out how to generate the appropriate MIDI signals, you can remote control the console. The challenge is figuring out to get from point A to point B. I suspect custom hardware will be needed.

If you want to control a lighting console from your phone, you need a console designed for remote control over an IP network, otherwise you're in kludge city.

I frequently recommend Luminair for our eDMX1 customers, works great but is iPad/iPhone only. You can of course substitute an iPod for iPhone. If you're looking for a solid performer I don't think you'll find anything Android unfortunately.
Maybe start from scratch? It would become very messy otherwise.

I see that you're in high school. In that case, I don't think you have any business controlling the lights with your Android.

I purchased both the iPad and iPhone versions of Luminair. The iPhone version makes a handy Remote Focus. The iPad version is much better. I've used it a number of times for simple shows and events. Assuming you got a MIDI app for Android and a way to translate the wifi data to wired data, how much control would the Leprecon LM-850 allow via MIDI?

I prefer to use a DMX merger in my rig so that I can run from a console or walk around the event and control lighting by wifi. The HTP merger takes the console DMX and the Enttec ODE DMX and merges into one DMX for the dimmers and instruments. No movers so it's all simple.

Just for reference eDMX1 does both HTP and LTP. The Enttec ODE only implements HTP.

I've never really played with LTP. In what situations do you find that better?

The Enttec ODE allows only two wifi connections but can handle six with a $25 upgrade. That behaves as a merger if I wanted multiple iOS devices to control different elements. I could put outdoor string lights on one surface and stage on another. Then feed the ODE and a regular console into another DMX merger and I could do more. Of course a better console would be even better.

My buddy was trying out his Mackie digital sound mixer with an iPad control surface so we were a couple of nerds on iPads last night at a community potluck and music event. In his case he doesn't need to run a snake to FOH and can mix FOH and monitors from anywhere. It's good for wedding and small gigs.
