Lighting Needs South Georgia

I am looking for a company/individual who could come to my theater and let me know what kind of lighting is possible. It is a school facility. Looking for someone near Savannah, GA, although Macon, GA or Atlanta, GA would be okay. We would be budgeting for a new light system, rewiring, and console. Any advice on where to look? Most of the websites I am coming across are for lighting rental for events rather than for a permanent installation.

There's a Barbizon in Atlanta. I'd also suggest Magnum Co, also in Atlanta.

A Lot of Lighting rental places also have sales and installation departments. If they dont they usually work with a company that does installations or can refer you to one.

Could send another link PM on request for where I work - also not local. Not sure in other than Barbizon above which normally specializes in movie and TV studio lighting who is local. Could be a great design staff out there and qualified, but certainly get lots of quotes. Have you at least asked other theaters in the area who advised them?

I'll second Barbizon & Magnumco in Atlanta. They both have folks they could send down. Magnum Company has overseen a few Cobb Co School theatre retrofitts.

Thank you! We are a small town, so this is the only theater around. Also, there are no stores or experts in our area. So, I really would have to get someone from Savannah, Macon, or Atlanta to come out. I contacted a few lighting stores, so I am waiting for some response as well. Being new to all this, I just wanted to make sure I got a good estimate.

Don't overlook the Technical Director or theatre lighting professor at nearby colleges or universities. Many would be willing to give advice for the cost of an adult beverage, sixpack, or lunch. Perhaps more importantly, it's opinions coming from someone who isn't trying to make a sale. A wise soul on here once quipped, "Never ask a barber if he thinks you need a haircut."

Especially with SCAD and Valdosta state being nearby. They both have strong programs. Even GA Southern has a decent program and it is closer to you.

Yes especially great idea on bringing in a new friend from local school (good long term contact to have also), but at times someone from a school might be technically proficient but there might be a smaller range of experience in spaces similar to yours or new technology - places they have worked at in depth experience, or new solutions. I have always advised bringing in the local to you college in the past and still do, but now as per a friend perhaps to look over the job site, come up with some ideas, and most importantly to sit down with you on the bid proposal. I now mostly think a industry retailer is of use (given references - and check with them specifically about problems.)

Those references on jobs done similar to your space might also be good long term contacts to have and especially useful for coming up with ideas on what was done in working well and not as much for what to do in your space. Go view their spaces, have them come out and view your's if possible. Make lots of friends in seeing spaces and coming up with your own ideas, and seeing what worked and didn't. Hope it helps.

I know I couldn't advise on a modern main stage, TV station or Bar, some other places I could do well but in my case not for modern gear or solutions. While I have advised at times to say storefronts, smaller theaters and gymatorums, as part of a retail staff there is not everything I excel at.
