Emulation Control software issues.

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gents,

I'm having an issue with the Elation, Emulation software. For some reason everything works perfectly fine while on the Mac mini. Cues work, patching etc etc. The issue I am having is that for some reason the iPAD does not want to work.

I'm not familiar with PC based "consoles" and would either like some help in solving this issue. Or if there is an easier alternative, hopefully windows based, to do a possible KVM then networked into the space then attached to a WAP then laptop.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

That is a very broad statement. Can you give us some more details.

The mac mini holds the program. From the Mac Mini the program works flawlessly into the space. 10 sixpar 300's and 2 DTW Par 300's. We ran ethernet to get a connection into the space. The only issue I'm running into is that the iPad that the client wants to use refuses to connect to the network. They claimed that they had two other lighting techs come down to troubleshoot with no avail. I made sure that the IP schema is inline with the system but that's as far as I could get.

I'm not versed with Mac based systems. So, it's either solve their issue or come up with another control system. It's a small stage and the client is requesting just to have live control (color wheel, dimming etc etc) wireless.

Well from what I read on the manual it’s a simple wireless network and nothing else.

Grab a router plug the console in assign IPs and leave it at that.

As far as control of the console it seems to be limited to just patching and playback(wireless Go button).

As far as th iPad. If techs came out and couldn’t get it to connect then you might look to a different solution. But it’s pretty simple. It’s all web based. Update the safari browser maybe or try chrome Firefox.

Good luck.

Thank you for the manual. It does seem pretty straight forward. As a side question. Could I get a couple of other reliable options for PC based boards?

Thanks.

The software is a multi OS Software. You could make the same system with everything PC based.

Windows Pc > Router > SurfacePro.

But

Tons of other software solutions though. Here is a few.

Lightjockey
Hands On
Nomad
Ma2 On Pc

I don’t think another software is going to solve you putting it together issue though.

Going to the DMX King and/or Enttec web sites will get you a list of PC based lighting software. Finding one that has an iPad remote application will be a challenge. I know I, for one, have stayed away from that. But it won't hurt to look.

So I'm guessing there really isn't something out there that can be programmed (Cues, scenes etc etc legwork) on one machine then have full control via an iPAD?

I use light factory. they have an iPad app that works like what you are trying to do. I have used it several times on my iPhone to trigger my lights at the same time that I had do a fly move.

All of the software I listed has some form of an iPad remote.

You can add Madrix to that list to.

Again it seems it’s not the software that’s the problem but someone to set it up. See what elation techs are around Vegas and ask them to come take a look at it.

I'm finally able to get back into the space. I'm thinking I have a couple of solutions from you guys. Thank you very much. I'm hoping when/if I get Elation up and running the iPAD option he wanted is enough. CHEERS!

Frankly, no one should be running a show from an iPad (or any other wireless device) through a software web portal. For hang/focus, sure. Just sit someone at the computer to push the GO button, or load the software on a laptop and put the laptop next to the person pushing the GO button. I would not want to rely on a web portal for show-critical operation.

Agreed, but in this application in-house A/V just runs a cues on loop. They are controlling 12 Elation 300's so he just wants to be able to change the color on the fly if needed.

Yup, simple. IP/port were fooked. Now that the client has his system back. He's finally able to see his control via the iPad. Hates it. So now I have a budget of 4500 to get hardware/software/programming/training. Any other suggestions for a PC based system with a a remote that has playback control along with individual fixture control?

Thanks.

Figured it was something simple. Wonder who the two “tech” were that they called in.
4500$ is a nice bit to play with for 12 lights.

So not the top of my list because no actual app so surface pro needed. Way easy to use. I figured it out in a day.

Top of my list I would suggest Martin Lightjockey 2.
A little learning curve but still manageable. Has it’s own app.

http://www.martin.com/en-us/product-details/ios-m-series-remote

Millions of tutorials on YouTube.

Both can run on pretty much any laptop post 2015. You could splurg and get a new tablet or second tablet for backup.

Then you just need to get the hardware to setup a lighting network for the wireless and your set.

Sounds like a fun project good luck.

Here is a suggestion. I was controlling a Cognito2 from an Android tablet using VNC a while back. You can work all the sliders and buttons remotely as if you were at the console. It says it's good for iPads. It's not a PC but maybe that could be an advantage. You would have to check if a one universe console is in your price range. Possibly someone can give you a demo.

That's actually a very simple setup, perfect for the in-house training, one more question if I may. When you reffered to "hardware to setup a lighting network" I understand how and what is needed on a wired system with a "remote"

But if I'm going the way of the surface and just use the dongle directly. Now there's my question. What exactly goes on the other side of the wifi, since I'm going into that to get to the system. Where would the USB-->DMX converter (like a Ettec D-pro or something)

Thanks again,

SurfacePro > WiFi > Router > Artnet Device ( Ethernet to Dmx converter) > Fixtures

The only NA Jands Vista distributor is AC lighting in Canadia email them and tell them what you want and they can give you the best artnet device option. Don’t call them from your cell phone unless you got international plan I got a 10$ charge last year for a 3 min converstion :/

For this wireless application I would still go with lightjockey though as it has a built in app so you don’t have to monkey around with artnet. It’s just Computer usb DMX to Fixtures, Computer plugged into router and tablet/Phone for control.

I'll have to look into LightJockey a little more. Jands seems pretty straight forward where LJ seems more hands on. Thanks for the suggestions.

Luminair 3 on the iPad is another easy basic light controller. It is over wifi. You will need an Ethernet to DMX adapter (I use DmxKing) and a router.
Easy to use and record cues and looks. A bit harder to do chases and effects but they are possible.
Regards
Geoff
