My first time experience

Well, tomorrow starts my first time going to LDI and I will be documenting that experience in this thread. I'm excited to report out but would love to field questions as well so that I can make this even more meaningful to everyone.

This thread is especially for you if you don't know what LDI is, or just haven't had enough information to decide if you wanted to go in the past.

BTW, if you are at LDI 2018, look for me. I will be the one in the black shirt.

I've been to tons of trade shows for lots of stuff. I tend to be low profile because some booths really try to put on the hard sell which becomes incredibly annoying to deal with.
But of all the shows I've been to, I've never been to one about live audio, video or lighting. They've all been about food or retail or recording or other technology.

So how can you judge products, or rather, how do the companies present their products so you can accurately judge them?

I've seen a bazillion Phillips and Martin insta pictures with 100 lights and tons of haze and it just looks like a rave.
How can you tell that x light might be useful in y use-case when it's such a mishmash of everything all at once?

Some companies will let you huh out focus the light, and there's enough space to get a sense of beam throw. I like to hear what vendors have to say, but if I'm going to make a purchase I'll do it through my dealer I'm also leary of buying new products that haven't been bug tested yet

You should talk to folks in your immediate network - people you know, like and trust - before you buy. It's a shoppers market so make sure that you ask questions, leading to questions that yield more questions, and don't settle for less. Best advice I have is for you to establish your budget and your needs. Be clear about your budget otherwise any vendor/dealer will give you what THEY think you need. Make sense? Happy to help you flush this out. I come from non-profit and low-budget events and can help. [email protected]
