I found a Lycan Miget HP on a dimmer. Is this ok to do? It is running off an ETC Cem3 dimmer, the level for the spotlight was set from the dimmer's cpu, not the desk.
No it is not OK. The HP, which as by-the-way, is not a xenon unit, does have a 575w metal halide/HMI type lamp that uses an power supply and ignitor circuit. You do not want to be putting this on a dimmer.
Big time no! Not only for the spot, but also for the dimmer. The fly-back voltages from the transformerballast and igniter can exceed the breakdown voltages of the SSR in the dimmer. The choke may not be enough to stop this from happening.
Of course, once the SSR pops, the dimmer effectively becomes a constant on circuit
Sorry for not being clear. They are not dimming it. It is merely being powered off the dimmer, the dimmer stays at 100, the level is set from the dimmer's cpu. Similar to powering a moving light off a dimming circuit
