Midas M32 XLR Outs

Running a musical, have several situations where an additional main program feed is needed such as video camera, dressing room monitor, etc. I used to set up mix buses that were basically the same as main out, but recently started going into Routing and assigning multiple XLR outputs to MAIN L. Seems to be working well. Any down-sides to this?

Yes and No! Like Always.

The additional "sends of Program feed" could probably be all the same, but they shouldn't usually be straight from the L+R bus. It's not wrong or bad, but If you end up adjusting for lots of people in the house or far fewer with your main the signal going to all those locations will also change.

Standard practice would be to "mirror" your L out send send it to a matrix Pre-Fader. this way you can get a separate level control for video/backstage etc. with out worrying that anything you change for FOH will affect it. You can also toss a Compressor on that Matrix now, as generally green room, lobby, and video people don't like as much dynamic range in there feeds that we like in a live FOH environment.

For really fine tuning a mix you can use a mix bus if you have time, I Usually send the video guy just a compressed Matrix feed that is my L+R. Sometimes the Videographer really wants me not to include orchestra or SFX in my send, in which case I'll use a Post Fader Mix Bus and send vocals at unity, with out any orchestra SFX, etc.

You could use an Xlive to record all inputs to to SD card. You can do the same through the USB connection. Let the videographer mix it in post.

@jonliles and @FMEng I'm impressed by anyone who's got a Shure M67 with a ducker retrofitted. I don't believe Shure included their ducker until much later than their original M67. Maybe your U.S. models had it first.
