Cyc Length / Pipe Height

Hello,
I have a cyc (or 'sky drop', call it what you will ;) ) that is too tall for the existing default hanging position. Would it be cheaper for us to raise the batten (dead hung), or re-hem the bottom of the drop? I would like to hang it there and keep it there permanently, so rolling up the bottom isn't a practical solution.

Thanks in advance!

You could do either. Hemming it would be easier cost wise; you wouldn't need to bring a crew in to mess with rigging. Just ship it to the company and they send it back changed.

How tall/wide is it? I ask because putting it on a roll drop/olio drop could get it out of the way for you without having to take it down each time. This would be more cost, but it would give you more options.

@Tyler Lindsley Does your cyc / sky drop have a pipe pocket and pipe in its bottom?
If so, you might consider adding three or four lines on the U/S side to support the bottom pipe from the top pipe then lay an extra length of pipe in the fold you've created so the fold hangs straight and cleanly folded.

Two more points to ponder: If / when you do the above, make your new bottom pipe a little longer so you can stretch the fold tightly sideways and secure it to the pipe with a tie line at both ends. If / when the fabric stretches, you can always undo your ties and re-tighten it.

On the negative side: If / when you fold the bottom up, if it touches the floor, the fold will get dirty and eventually holes will wear through form chafing. This will preclude ever using the full length again in the future.

It's 42' wide and currently 16' high. There is a traveler immediately downstage of it that I've been using to cover it when not in use. There are no obstructions above - this pipe once was a traveling pipe but is dead hung now because there was a loading door added USL that cut off 5' of the fly rail.

I think I like the length of the backdrop because it gives me a little more head room without having to bring borders way down. The pipe is currently at 12'.

Seems to me a shame (many reasons) to cut a 16' high drop down to 12' just because a pipe is mis-hung. There are so many ways to dead-hang I won't speculate, but call in a professional (ETCP), or DIY if qualified. You'll be happier in the long run.

A picture of the "dead hang" might help. If you are not trained and experienced in rigging, hire someone, but shouldn't be to expensive in NY - city or state.

Ya, lets see some pictures. Depending on how it was hung it could be very easy to raise. Your also not too far from me.

@Tyler Lindsley and @Footer Cutting the fabric shorter would be CRIMINAL when you've got the clearance to raise the pipe.

Attached are 3 images of the location - the pipe in discussion is the one currently holding the strip lights. Take note of our bright off-white back wall too! ;)

That would not be hard for a qualified rigger to raise except the batten is shared with a traveller, an important detail I missed. The simple and correct answer is to add another batten for the sky drop, but it will cost a little.Do you need the batten behind with (unused?) strip lights? Would be easier to remove them, raise that batten for sky drop, and move the drop. A scissors lift or even a genie would make this fairly simple.

Looks like this is already the plan(to use the strip light pipe).

Assuming you have a lift in house that can access the steel it would be very easy to do. I'd give Syracuse or BMI a call, both are within striking distance and can run out and do this in a few hours. If their price is way out of line for what you want to pay PM me.

Yes, the pipe I'm considering raising would be the one currently hung with strip lights, which will come down once we strike "Addams Family" this weekend. Syracuse installed our system, I will give them a call. I have a couple other things I'd like them to address as well, so maybe they could send a couple guys out and kill 2 birds with one stone. Thank you all for your input!
